    Boots

Question for those who are aren't always on the Tarmac, what boots do you find are the best buy for off roading ?. Will be doing some training at the BMW centre in the Brecon Beacons shortly, followed by some off roading here in Ireland and need a decent boot with emphasis on ankle protection, followed closely by comfort. Could trudge through the last 10 year of Rides "Best Buy" recommendations, but find the advice on this forum way superior.

A pair of Motocross boots gives the best protection, however don't buy a new pair, get a worn in pair as they are impossible to use properly or even walk in with dignity when new.

I have a pair of Alpinestars (2nd hand off my neighbour) and a pair with Fly written on them (worn in from new by me, what a pain) and they've all done stirling work with my DR350 laying on top of me or bits of tree leaping up and attacking me. Also wore out a pair of Gaerne (liked those)in the past as well as a few other pairs who's name is lost in the mists of time.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Mine were so bad that I wouldn't call in to a supermarket on the way home in case I fell on my *rse trying to walk like a human. Just had them re-soled (wore out the original soles) and they're like a pair of comfy slippers.

Had a quick look at fleabay, unfortunetly nothing in my size that isn't flea-bitten or plain worn out, likewise can't find anything in fly mx brand or Alpinestars new. The only brand that seems to match is Prexport, anyone have any experience with these ?.

Just got me some new Alpinestars Tech 3 "all terrain". Most MX boots seem to have "no grip "soles, these have reasonably deep tread. My Altbergs, though dead comfy offer little protection when the bike stamps my feet into tree stumps etc, and it really hurts - bits of hospital time it swelled so much! The mx ones are armoured to suit, and even new they are not feeling incrediblally hard to walk in!

Hmm, These are currently going for £124 on eBay, the main stipulation for doing the course in the Beacons is that you must have proper MX boots before they will let you ride, my current Frank Thomas Gore-tex ones won't cut it apparantly, mainly 'cos thay don't offer enough protection at the ankle. The Tech 3's sound like they just might fit the bill.

Might be worth ringing Mountoy Motorcycles in Dublin, they're closing down next week and there's always a chance that they have the bargain you're looking for.

    Red face Re: Boots

I bought Alpinestars Vectors second hand off ebay. They seem to offer great protection and they look a bit like ski boots and restrict any ankle movement in a similar way (it's a bit like having both your feet set in concrete). The restriction on ankle movement makes changing gear very difficult. They are reasonably new so I am hoping that my problems will ease as they wear in. To this end I am wearing them permanently now 24/7 which causes problems at bed time and when going to work (wearing a suit). I think I paid about £70.00 which is goood value if I can get them broken in.

    I've got a pair of these http://www.dirtrider.net/drn_tested/...force_srs.html

Comfortable from the word go and if you walk around a lot, you can just bolt on a new sole. Oh yes, the white ones make you feel like a Stormtrooper (now where's that Simpon Bandit helmet gone...)

OTOH the black ones are quite nice too. You can never have boots that are too big or too black.
