Forum spell check facility

Now then boys and girls..................
I'm not sure whether anyone is aware of this little firefox add on?
When you are in the "Reply to thread" page, if you right click any where within the area that you normally type text, you will see a drop down menu.
It contains text such as Undo, Select all, check spelling and language.
Click on the language and then click on add dictionary. A new tab in your browser will open. Scroll down or up and find English and then just install.
When you type then if there is a spelling mistake it will be highlighted by a red underline. To achieve the correct spelling, right click the word/s and choose from the suggested list. If it is something like Mmmmmmmmmmmmm or sarky its a word, but just no recognised by the installed add on dictionary. Right click it and just scroll down to " add to dictionary"

Hey presto no more sarky comments about your spelling

Re: Forum spell check facility

The forum software also supports ieSpell that is available as a download for most browsers... Google Chrome also has a built in spell checker that is enabled by default and will red underline words it doesn't know..

Problem with most of them though is that they're mainly US spellings

Re: Forum spell check facility

Unlike spelling checkers, I don't think there is a grammar or apostrophe checker extension available. Perhaps there could be a handy quick reference guide put next to the "Reply to Thread" box detailing correct use of:
  • there
  • their
  • they're
Also useful would be a note on using the following:
  • its
  • it's
There could also be a reminder that plurals do not require an apostrophe before the 's' at the end.

Perhaps there could also be a dialect translator for the benefit of those unable to understand posts that are made with a heavy northern or Scots accent.

The possibilities are endless

Wood it bee oak ay to ficks awl ma wurds if a tipe in a scottish axe end.

Sorry, but couldnt resist the temptation . . . . but I actually like the fact that this forum is not underlining my grammer and spelling if I make an error. Otherwise it would feel just too much like work.

Well it all depends on the viewpoint of the site visitor. One man's fix is another man's break. Surely you'd like to have a 'Scottish Mode' that would translate all posts into your native tongue

Re: Forum spell check facility

The BBC English newsreader vocabulary works perfectly well for me both spoken and written. Given the International aspects to this forum then I fail to see how English, US English, French, German and other languages could be catered for by a spell checker without a high % having loads of little "underlines" for members whose spelling and grammer is even worse than mine.

And as for a Scottish mode , well, there's a Glaswegian version, an Aberdonian version, an Ayrshire one and Fife is another.

Re: Forum spell check facility

Safari has a built in spell checker but it uses the American dictionary, so a basic understanding of english is needed.
