Is that 654 or 645 cc??
If its 645 then the XR is in the big boys class, 654 is the cc of the KTM 690??
Looks good, wonder when term ends.....
Phil, share a trailer??

645cc... my typo.
Definately! Ian and I were considering doing the '09 event on smaller bikes, given Austin's warning that the trails would be even more technical than this year. But now I want to take the big bikes back to show folks that it isn't the machinery that gives you a shot of winning.
<soap box>After all this is a Horizon's Unlimited event, in my mind the bikes should be riden to and from the event. That's why it was moved from a weekend to mid-week, to give people some time before and after for the trip.</soap box>
Also I wonder why 645cc was chosen? Why not 600cc? I wonder what bikes they were trying to ensure gets into the 'smaller' category?![]()
It's not the age, it's the mileage...
Grant did send me an email explaining the sizes they were considering but it looks like i don't have it any more...
looking at last years pics there seams to a lot of vans and pogos, suppose to some extent the HUMM is a victim of its own sucess....
i know a few people took bikes down in vans partly because it gave them somewhere to leave gear if your camping, maybe there is some argument for all the 'campers' renting a room to use as a secure store for kit while out on the course?... would encourage people to ride down a lot more.
there was talk of the points being worked out differently, I know somebody else who did it last year that also thought it was a bit unfair....
A Perfect bike for this event.
I used one this year, and some of the trail''s we did this year will be used in 2010 Event.
Even above 2500m the bike still had plenty of power.
Basil my team mate used a Serow and it showed that a small bike in the right hand's can be competative .
I have now done the event on a DR350 {two up }...a XT660R..and a XR400R. If you have off road experience I don't think that in this area it matter's what size bike you ride.
Basil as used a KTM 990 ADV...A KTM640 ADV and A Yamaha 250 serow.
we have riden down ,and also taken them down in a van.
If you don't have a lot of time it's quicker and cheaper to take a few bike's down in a van or use a trailer.
we also sleep in the back of your van's.
The bike's are then used for a week's trail riding after the event, then the van does the boaring part on the motorway home.
Team Dipstick
ps I think the reasion that the event as been mover to mid week ,is that there is less chance of coming in contact with local's out useing the trail's on a weekend

We are signed up again, taking the 690 KTM and the GF's AJP 200.
As I read it, you choose your class if your team is 'mixed' .... we will go in the small cube class because of the AJP and the fact it has a top end of about 60 on Enduro gearing.
Camping this time... purely because the 'spa, pool, sun loungers etc' were not used by us because we were out all day on the bikes.
If any of you rufty tufty tourers want any spares or tools lugging down in the van let me know .... but space will be limited...... and I am travelling early.... the Thursday before .... as I am stopping over at a mate's near Toulouse on the way down.
That said, I will have a big tool box with enough kit to rebuild most things and a full stand if anyone needs them (but based on camp site rather than hotel) the price for any of my services is a cold San Miguel at the end of any of the riding days....![]()
