Scott Trial 2008
I'm planning to go to the Scott on Saturday 18th. I've never been before so if anyone has any pointers they would be appreciated.
I'd like to know what's best: travel around to different sections? where are the sections - are they easy to find/follow/arrows? best section for spectators? travel around on trail bike or varadero? places to avoid/not to go? Any advise/help would be appreciated. Thanks Rich |

Re: Scott Trial 2008
cant give any route advice, sorry. BUT i am just reading a book about the history of the Scott motorcycle and the trial started as a works outing for the guys who used to build the bikes in i think the years just before(or just after) the first world war.

Re: Scott Trial 2008
the best way to see the scott is to follow on a motorbike.
it is essential to get the scott programme to plan your day, they are available from various outlets in richmond before the event (i get mine from mills newsagents in the market place),but they are available on the day at the start field. a good map of the swaledale will be helpful if you don't know the area well. the start field is half way between richmond and marske, head out of richmond towards marske and you can't miss it! (finding the marske road out of richmond might be the problem!). stick to the sections indicated in the programme they are all worth seeing, don't bother looking for non-spectator sections you'll see less of the trial as a result. if you are not following anybody in particular, i find it best to try and keep up with the leading men. i like to see the start and,if your on a bike, you should get to underbanks section 1 before the first riders. from there i would probably go to one of the sections on the low row to arkengarthdale road. from there onto section 11 or 12 maybe.then onto section 15 at the finish. first rider goes at 9am. i'll be there early, its a good autograph hunting year this year , my son wants to boost his collection.then it'll be underbanks, then observing on booze moor! enjoy your day! |

Re: Scott Trial 2008
Definitely buy the programme, and if you do not know the area, you will need a map. All of the sections described in the programme are good. There are a few others that are easily accessable by the public but stick to those in the programme for your first visit. Don't try to get to all of them - my advice would be Surrender / Roys Rocks, CB Inn for a pint whilst the bikes are on the Grouse Moors, Grand Canyon, Stang, home.
You might need to get to the sections early to get a good position. At least on a bike, you will be able to park up close by. (Tip - take something to stop your side stand sinking on soft ground). I have only missed the Scott twice since I was 6 years old in 1971. Once was my college graduation and the other was when it was cancelled due to foot and mouth outbreak. In the last 25 years or so, I have been supporting my brother who was riding, so I did not see many sections, but tended to catch him at road crossings and petrol checks. This year, he is not riding, so I will probably see a few more sections. As I will be travelling up from Wiltshire, I am not sure whether I will take my Transalp or just the car. |

Try the section opposite Underbanks on the return leg, "Reels Head" I think. I'll be going on the KTM and joining the sections up with a couple of trails. Hopefuly meeting Rich1960 (arranged on different forum) at the start field, then going to Orgate splash, then its just play it by ear. I've tried to keep up with Dougie before and failed, he makes a mockery of the predicted times in the program. I'm looking forward to the day, have fun and I might see you there. |

My name is Bernadette i am the programme editor for the Scott Trial, I am always looking for articles to go in the programme. After reading that you have followed it for quite a few years, just wondered if you would be interested in writing an article to go in this years programme? Cheers Bernadette |
