Apparently they 250's have the same power as an XR400... Seems pretty cool...

I'm pretty much decided on my next bike (seeing as I have just passed my A2) being a WR400-450 or a CRF450.

And finally, Oh my god, what the hell did you do to your front wheel meljordan

Thought this may interest you, how you can get that much out of a 250 beats me...

EDIT: Just realised it's the 2-stroke one, my bad.

Technically they may have the same (well, similar) max BHP, but the CRF makes it right at the top end - the bugger revs to over 11,000rpm for goodness sake!

It also has almost no torque in comparision with the XR400, and is essentially a race engine (although admittedly the 250X is in a far softer tune than the 250R version) - the XR400 would be a far better do-it-all trail bike in all but the most technical terrain, and even then the throttle/power delivery of the CRF means it can be a bit flighty...

Depends what you need/want really? I'm not knocking the CRF250 at all - it is a fantastic, nimble and ergonomic little blighter (and the X version has the e-start of course) - but it won't lug in the the same was as a XR400 (or any mid size capacity machine) and you'll be dancing on the gear pedal to get the best out of it...

The CRF450 on the other hand... well, if you are prepared to keep a check on the valves, would be the puppy... x

But it's light and that counts for a lot coz it makes it easy to ride. It's the first 4 stroke I've ridden that feels light alongside strokers. Power is great to have as well though especially on the road. If you take a look at any enduro watch those KTM and gas gas 200's flying around. They don't knock the stuffing out of the riders so much.

    Re: CRF 250X

I agree it's light weight - like I said above, in technical terrain the CRF250 is a great prospect - it's just for general trail riding (especially here in the UK) there tends to be a lot of road miles in between?, and you end up murdering bikes like the CRF on the road at anything more than about 60mph. The valve maintainance schedule is also rather tedious (I'd rather be riding than spannering)...

I have two friends with CRF250s - one guy tends to trailer up the Dales and says the bike is bullet proof for the odd weekend jaunt (he didn't bother with the valves for over a year, and it was fine x) The other loved his so much he racked up loads of miles on it! - but ended up trading it for a DRZ which was more of an all rounder...

They are great bikes, but pretty focused - that's all I was saying...

    Re: CRF 250X

The great thing is there is a choice so each to their own. Still think the old CRM250 was the best allround trail bike made (legal, reliable, felt light to ride, great engine on mk2 onwards, pretty quick).

    Re: CRF 250X

Great a CRF forum! I have an XR4 and a CRF250 and they're both fantastic bikes. The XR suffers cack-handed riding better and is great on climbs, the 250 rules the technical bits. If you have to do a lot of road work you can look at the gearing on the 250. The standard rear cog is a huge 53, you hardly use first gear, try something smaller to cut the revs between trails.
