    CRF450X replacement for an XR400

So who's had both or got both.
Is the CRF450 a natural replacement for the XR400? Am I going to find a handful?

From what I've heard from the guys at the stuntlife forum, the things have massive power, apparently worlds of difference between them and they need a lot more maintenance than the XRs.

But I'd love to have one, they just look so fun!

Check out Ryan Moore on youtube, he stunts a CRF450R. (though hard to tell from all the mods)

    Ye-haaaaaah Dave!!

The XR400 makes about the same power as the CRF250!

Double the power, less mass and taught chassis/sussy. You know it makes sense!!

Re: CRF450X replacement for an XR400

Just spent this weekend with a 450 on an extended test ride - excellent, excellent, excellent! Loads of power but not really intimidating at all, not like the R. Very flexible, great on the hills, handles and feels very much like the 250 but in many ways needs less rider input because of the extra torque. My miles are mostly on the dirt so I don't know what it would be like if you use it on the road a lot but i would guess it would be fine. The only down side is tomorrow I have to give it back...Not sure if it's really an obvious replacement for an XR but I will be getting one when funds allow.

    Hi daves
I've riden the crf450 motorcross and enduro version. the motorcross one was mental and imense fun i loved it and couldnt keep the front end down it begged me to lift it as soon as i was aboard. the enduro version didnt feel so frantic i think because it has a wider ratio geabox much better for trail riding and had excelent suspension and quite easy to ride so long as you keep your wits about you it didnt take long to get used to however for the type of riding i do the xr is perfect and wont be changing it. As well as shorter service intervals you may find the crf heavier on chain, sprockets and tyres

Re: CRF450X replacement for an XR400

Dave I used to own an XR400 and now have a CRF450X. They are very different bikes , the XR is more of a trail bike whilst the CRF is very focused and of course is immensley powerful and very fast . Truth is for me the XR was a better bike , its much more comfortable than the CRF and dosent take it out of you as much pyhsically , last year I spent a week on an XR in Morocco choosing that rather than the CRF which was also on offer . In tight going such as on Rallys the CRF is hard work , certainly for me as I dont have the skill or fitness required , I find myself wrestling against the power of the bike a lot of the time . Having said that a mate has just got a 250 X which is a stunning bike and feels miles lighter and chuckable than the 450 . I also think the XR will be easier to keep going long term due the simplicity of the engine - no e start of course. Having said all that the CRF is till great fun and imho much nicer to ride and own than a KTM for instance
