I'm pretty well through a project with the CRF230. I've scrapped the "lighting kit" that came with the bike and replaced it with xr400 headlight, shroud and speedometer. Speedo cable from xr200 fits a treat. The plastic gear box on the spindle has been modified with an alloy sleeve and that's fine. There is a key way in the hub to take the round washer drive key from the xr 400 and the seal fits. All is well so far.
Now the crunch. The plastic gear box scrapes on the edge of the hub and when this bike gets in the N Wales bogs it will simply be destroyed. My question is......Will the front wheel from the xr200 fit into the forks of the crf230 and provide a gap between the plastic gear box and the hub.
I believe it will, but I need to find someone locally, 50 miles say from Wrexham with the xr200 where I can give it the beady eye and measure the spindle.

If it works and I think it will......big success.

Anyone out there that can help I would b pleased to read the replies.

Remember, best keep the round rubber things at the bottom, close to the floor....most of the time.

Bin the xr clocks they're usually in KPH anyway and get a trailtech then you won't need to worry a bout a speedo drive or cable

yea they tell you 4mm, but that just ain't gona happen,
as you can see i had to use 2 Lego bricks to get me to the point where the sensor would pick up the magnet.
if the wire was a bit longer i could of put the sensor right by the hub where the magnet would be at its closest point.
the only other option i had was to lower the front forks, but the Lego bricks have saved my bacon from the big yellow cash cows that you find hidden behind road signs and numerous foliage.
seems to work fine though, i had my m8 on his 2008 ccm check all me speeds and they are spot on.
oh 1 more thing, this speedo was on offer from halfords, 3 for the price of 2,
now this unit caters for 2 bikes! so i got 3 of them for 22 quid reserved on-line but the shop could only find 2 so they gave me the 12f to compensate.
    so I'm left with 2 speedo's @ 8f fore spares.
if anyone is looking at getting one of these they are on offer at the moment so just go to the halfords site and reserve them @ your local store .
    good luck.

    Re: crf,230,speedometer.

    Hi there,
I to am new to this forum, I just stumbled across it and noticed you were into XR/CRf's and lived in Wrexham (Like me). I used to own an XR200 which I loved to plod about on. I found it a bit gutless when I needed it to pick up quick on a climb. Other than that it was brilliant little bike. HOw does it compare to the CRF230? Have you owned a XR200? What part of Wrexham are you and where do you ride? Places to go are getting harder to find these days.

    Re: crf,230,speedometer.

    jamie,
i am not the person living in wrexham, but i have both the xr200r and the crf230f.
the engine in the crf is far superior in every way, despite being about the same hp approx 19, the torque is much better and it will pull higher gears better even at low speeds.
it is the same bore but it has been stroked to get the 20 or so cc's out of it, but it does make the difference.
the elec start is great as you do not wear yourself out starting it after an off, but the xr will run rings around the crf on the rough stuff, even though the suspension is 25+ years old it takes the bumps better at higher speeds.
my son now rides the xr, and i cant catch him on it, thats the only thing wrong with the crf, trail suspension, ideal for trail riding, but anything faster is too bumpy.
if you could get a crf lump and put it in the xr frame you would have a brilliant woods bike.
the only thing with the crf is the size if you are over 5-6 then you may find it a bit crowded, i fitted bar risers to mine, i is better.
    good luck with your bike.
    now on to garyd,
the bars are renthal, they call it the 'carmichel bend. i did use bar risers but the cables were ok, although because i have the hand guards fitted the throttle cable are a little short, and i have moved the horn to a better spot.
    thanks
    shaun
