Advice for a newbie?

Hi Guys, first post so be gentle and excuse anything too newbish!

I'm thinking of plumping up for either a CRF450x or a 250x, not 100% decided on which as yet. I'm an ex-motocrosser, so am happy enough with riding the things on the off-road stuff but it's day-to day useage is going to be my work commute which is about 8 miles of a/b-road and about 8 miles of motorway each way (about 35 miles a day in total). Obviously it's going to be getting some green-lane useage (or mx track useage) on the weekends and both bikes will be good for that, my question is how will either bike stand up to the every day stuff (or if they will at all), and which version is going to be the better option in terms of maintenance, rideability etc. I'm leaning to the 450 since it should handle the road stuff better, but having had a read-through on here it would seem the 250 can do a job as well so I'm genuinely unsure.

I'm also debating wether to go for some supermoto wheels and tyres for the road stuff to save me hammering the knobblies to bits every day, is that something that people would recommend or are there tyres that you can get which will handle it all no problems?

Go for the 450x. A more reliable bike full stop. Much better for the road as well, but neither really suited as a dual sport.
I would definitely look into getting some 'road wheels and tyres' as the tarmac will eat the knobblies.
Good Luck.

Re: Advice for a newbie?

Thnaks very much, would seem to tie in to what I have picked up from elsewhere as well. With regards to the choice of bike, all I can say is that as an ex-motocrosser I have a soft-spot for them. I know they aren't the most practical or even the most sensible solution but I know how to maintain them and I can use them as intended on weekends!

It has to be the 450 for any serious road work. The 250 is reliable but you'd be thrashing it everywhere.

Re: Advice for a newbie?

the 250 is a great green laner but it will just not pull on the motorway. you could supermoto it, and sprocket for the suprmotard set up. but think 450 is the way forward. it just has more brute force for the everyday stuff, with plenty of off road capability for technical sections!
