    I got one!

    Hi Guyís,

I will try and get some pics up at some point, hopefully over the weekend although life is pretty manic at the moment. Basically I took delivery of my NX 650 on Saturday 14th Feb, itís been a while since owning a bike but feel that Iím already getting the hang of things again. I appreciate you never stop learning though so will take it very steady for the foreseeable future.

Itís a 96 model, got a new MOT on it Friday 20th, passed with no advisories so very happy. Going to keep the bike as it is at the moment, just using it for riding to work and planning a trip to watch the Paris Roubaix cycle race in April.

Future plans are to strip the bike back and give it a proper clean and lube, it needs to be reliable for me to get to work on so happy to hear any maintenance tips for trouble free running no matter how obvious they may seem. Oil has only recently been changed but will also schedule this in soon. At the moment the levels are good and oil looks very clean.

The bike does sometimes stall when stopping at lights or in traffic, seems to be a fairly common occurrence depending on where I look inline, itís got a non standard exhaust with the carb re-jetted to accommodate but it still seems to occasionally stall. I donít think I am at the level or stage at the moment where I will want to pull the carb off and mess about with testing new jets. However, once again if anyone has any tips or advice where to buy new jets I will be happy to hear. Before any one might ask I donít know what size jets are currently in the carb. As mentioned I donít really want to find out yet either. Let me enjoy the bike for at least another few weeks before I take it apart and forget how it goes back together. As long as the stalling is just occasional and wonít cause any issues with the engine then happy to get embarrassed and have to restart every now and then. The bike does smell like its running rich. Starts fine though hot or cold. Oh it has backfired about four times in 20 journeys. three times from starting warm, as an example after filling up with petrol, I think I flooded it using the throttle though and once while driving. I accelerated fast then slowed down quickly, BANG!

A few questions then, I have looked these up and done various searches so hopefully you wonít mind answering questions which I know have been asked before.

If Iím stuck in traffic, how long can I sit with the bike at idle before I need to get worried about over heating? Normally the bike idles around 1500rpm.

Iím going to change oil/filter in the next couple of weeks. Change the spark plug and attempt to look at valve clearances. Anything else I need to look at or lube. I have done the chain already and will be looking at this again in a week or so.

Tappet noise, is a slight tappet noise acceptable? I seem to recall from my days as a motor mechanic youíre always going to get a very faint slight noise. Did I remember this correct?

The bike rides great, starts great etc, just the occasional stall at lights. Just wish I had the confidence to get some speed up around the bends but guess this will come over time. Iím not a maniac but its clear by being overtaken by every other bike out there that I am being a bit cautious at the moment.

Think thatís it for now. I should be able to get the pics at the weekend.

    Jamie

    Welcome to the site.
Best thing to do is just ride it and enjoy it ,these engines are pretty solid and as long as you keep your eye on the oil level you will be fine
As the old saying goes , If it aint broke then dont fix it.

Yes, they do specialise at stalling
Do ensure no tappets are tight.
Do ensure air mixture is correct.
You say aftermarket plus rejet, who says rejet is correct?
Tickover should be 1400 I think, can't quite recall.
It might be set to 1500 to mask the stalling.
Make sure air filter and all ducting are good; including rubber carb inlet.
I had a 99 model and setting tappets corrected it for me, but I did have standard cans.

    Enjoy.

    Re: I got one!

good thing about dominators is that there's about five thousand previous owners who's been there and done that. any questions and you will get an answer! a good carb clean/setting, a decent plug and valve gap setting usually cures the stall problem. i know from my own expereince when idling at traffic in the summer here ( velly velly hot) the temp on the cylinder head can go up a degree a second but soon drops off as soon as you're moving. i wonder if this the part cause of the stalling or maybe a Honda anti-overheating safety feature . ever since i put a cyl.head temp gauge on my i'm more aware at the temp and probably over cautious. the best advise i can give is the same as every dommi owner. check & check the oil and change the oil/filter regularly. every 3k miles max. its not that expensive because they dont need special oil. i would say 90% of engine probs on this type of engine is oil related, or the lack of it! enjoy the bike. i bought mine nearly 6 years ago ( the longest i've kept a bike) and still enjoying it. cant say any fairer than that.
    oh and bienvenidos!

ps. dont forget the pics. we all know what they look like but we still like to see them !

Oil changes with good quality oil, keep an eye on the level between changes as they can use a bit.
As for the stalling, try moving the mixture screw out a 1/4-1/2 turn. That little rocker helps loads.

That was supposed to read, that'll help the tickover loads?
    Bloody spell check

    Re: I got one!

    Hi Guys,

Thanks, I will have a look at the carb settings/clean carb/inspect jets in a few weeks when I have a day booked off work to do an oilchange and some other bits. I donít know for sure if the carb is jetted correct.Iím assuming once replacing the stock cans itís a case of trial and error. Iknow the bike runs fine and stops fine most of the time.

Where is a good place to buy new jets? All the places I havefound online seem to only have a limited number of variations. I guess it doesnítreally matter until I find out what I have and take it from there. Hopefullythe tip about unscrewing the idle screw will correct things a bit.

I have a free weekend this weekend, when I say free I willget some pics posted up. Not much time for anything else while the family arearound. Thatís why I have to take a day of to work on the bike.

    Re: I got one!

when i first got my Dommie it was like all the others ....often stalling at traffic lights etc . mentioned it to local mechanic and after a small adjustment to the mixture screw ( richened it) never had any probs since . he said that many bikes were set up to run lean so they passed various emission laws/ mine was the last model made ...(don't know if that makes any difference ).

So guys here is my Dominator. Thanks for all the responses to this thread. Yesterday I cleaned and lubed the chain, wanted to change the plug but didn't get a chance. Got a day at the end of the month booked off to do some more maintenance.

Do you guys use a bike jack or paddock stand to lift these up? One is a lot cheaper than the other but not sure if it would be suitable?

    Re: I got one!

Two years old today, well in my ownership any way.

29K miles when I purchased, now on 43K. MOT on 2nd March, hopefully she goes through fine. Here are some pics from the last two years....

We just come back from the Dragon Rally

    Had some tantrums

Learnt how to make a mess with wiring but at the same time installed spot lights, heated grips and a Mosfet R/R from an R1

    Replaced the rear shock..

Replaced the front and rear disc and pads, just changed the rear pads again..

We went to France to see Wiggo

Made a mess on the garage floor every 2000 miles or 1000 miles depending on my iffy calculations..

    Spotted less fortunate bikes..

Went for a ride with another Dominator!

Managed to replace the chain and sprockets but have the pics on the laptop still.

I have met some great people, both online and off, been at the receiving end of some great advice which has helped a lot. here is to another two years at least... Happy Valentines Day People
