    Clutch rattle

as you will know i have a 89 Dommie. Pulled in to move my phone to my jacket as it was moving out of my trouser pocket and notice a terrible rattle from the clutch. By pulling on the lever it got quieter but didn't go away. Any ideas? Like i know that the @ rattles but this was 100 times worse!

thanks for reply anton. I would think that with the noise not being there all the time and the sound the plates and springs make sense. I'll let my mechanic mate hear it sometime.

UPDATE, there was talk yesterday about bikes using oil. Just happened to look at my dommie yesterday while fitting that screen (thanks anton) and the dip stick came out completely dry. Now the engine was still slightly warm. So i quickly put in between 1 and 1/2 litre of oil. Seems ok. Was then talking to someone today who said it sounds like a gear box noise as it did it when not in gear. He asked if the oil level was ok. When i heard the noise it was low on oil. hopefully thats it sorted now. Just keep an eye on the oil level.

on that note, how is the best way to check oil level, or when even?

Check mine after every long ride. If your commuting - check it weekly.

After engine is warmed up, get bike on level ground and a piece of 4x2 timber under the sidestand while the oil settles - leave to simmer for a min. or 2 . (bike needs to be as level as possible).

Check dipstick and top up as required - try not to overfill, or you'll end up with oil in the airbox.

Hmm - dont know about your gearbox - you'd have trouble changing gear if there was a problem there

    Yikes.

The range of the dipstick (min-max) is about a liter, and I think the bike keeps about half a liter in the crankcase, the rest goes back in the tank.

Given that it only holds just over 2 liters of oil, you may have just skirted death here...
