Most important thing (and biggest pain in the arse for the dommie) is getting a shop manual.
They tell you how things fit together, and they're very nice to read through in advance so you know more or less what's coming and any eventual gotchas... It's often the difference between ah I've seen this instead of ohmighodwhatthehellamIdoing.
But do mind those little lines that say "take out engine -- see section foo", that turn a simple one page job into a gruelling adventure... I'm looking at you there, Haynes...
Problem with this is that there's only 2 options for the dommie as far as I'm aware of: The Bucheli manual, which is very terse and German, and the original honda shop manual, which is both excellent and expensive.
There's a PDF of the latter available for download somewhere online, can't remember where exactly.
