    Dommie advice

I'm looking to return to the Honda Trail bike fraternity as the 'blade is about to become the deposit on a house extension

I am looking at Dommies for some cheap (ish) thrills as I borrowed one about 10 years ago for a few weeks and loved it.

Are there any model years to avoid and anything deal breaking to look for while surveying.

    Thanks guys

    Pauli

Couldn't tell you if there is a duff year, but I would aim to get a disc rear brake model if it was me. Nothing especially weak on a Dommie other than usual Honda things, and by that I mean top end troubles. Oil must be changed regularly and kept topped up if you want a long life from the motor, so ask lots and lots about servicing. If it has original exhausts check for bad rust where they pass infront of the rear wheel. Not the end of the world if they have gone as Laser Produro's are a good replacement (@250 quid) but a bargaining point. Have heard of cracks in the rims around the spokes, so have a nosey there too.
Apart from that it's pretty much standard tyre kicking stuff. Don't be put off if it won't pull the skin off custard under 4K they're all like that. Part of the joy of a big single with a short (relatively) stroke

Best of luck with the hunt matey

Thanks for that - I'll just have a hunt around and see what's available.

I seem to remember there being a ton of torque, but I am getting on a bit and I had an XR250 at the time

One last thing, I keep reading about restricted models. I assume this doesn't apply to the UK?

    Cheers

Don't know for the UK. In France 88-91 is 46hp 91-96 is 43hp and it keeps goind down from there.

Yes we did get restricted models in the UK, but it's a relatively easy fix (I think) It's done by changing the inlet manifold and rejetting if my memory serves me.

I wonder if these are actually measured and confirmed power values, or just a bit of manufacturer figure fiddling to satisfy driving license rules or catagories .

One thing is for sure, I'm looking forward to riding in town without fear of wrist ache this summer.

Had a look at the autotrader today, seems 2K should secure a lowish miles example

47.6 at the wheel measured by MotoManic a Torcy just ouside of Paris for my 89 so I imagine that it's not far off.

Hmm 47 is quite a lot, I'm guessing they had some kind of post calculation going to compensate for the losses in the drive train.

The official power numbers are always on the outgoing shaft instead of the rear wheel, it's usually estimated at about 10% loss so 47 shaft would mean about 42 rear wheel.

Ofcourse, some of the guys running the tests tweak this a bit so they can give the customer nicer figures...

For comparison: My knackered old beast got a first reading of 36 at the wheel, with all the conversion bits off.

My Dom is not entirely stock. Mikuni TM40, K&N Filters, and KRM headers and a MIG exhaust can(and a Laser for everyday).
