    Dommie Modding Questions

Hi folks. I have a 1989 NX which has just rolled over 30k miles. The engine has been rebuilt by Dave Lambeth in the last 4-5 years, and the bike's done Maroc and Tunisia a couple of times! At the moment I'm using it for laning, with the 300mile+ big tank still fitted. I have a few questions:

    1) What header pipe options do I have? On my XR650L (same engine) I had an FMF Powerbomb, which was awesome:

Problem is that now my stock headers are blowing at the head. Not repairable - if I go for some XR650L fitments, my 2-1 Lazer end pipe isn't gonna fit any more. Who else makes headers?

    2) I have the Acerbis large tank (26L) and I was wondering if anyone else has a problem with the seat? I can't get it to fit properly. The front lip thing doesn't seem to engage.

    3) Has anyone successfully fitted an 18" rear rim? My wheels are shortly going to be rebuilt with Excel rims, and a larger rear rim will enable me to use the latest decent enduro rubber. My mechanic said I need to be very careful that a larger wheel doesn't foul the swingarm...

    4) Finally, does fitting a high front 'guard give cooling problems? I want to give the bike a more "dirty" look.

    Cheers guys.

    Hi POB,

Heres a link to a pic of my dommie with high guard, and acerbis tank/seat mod. it was a tank for an xr 650l, so i used race seat foam to fill in the gap between the seat and the tank.

Ive gone back to the low mudguard now, but had no handling problems.

Egu-motoren make a big bore set, don't know about the quality though, I've never seen one in the flesh.

The trick with my acerbis tank (1989 model) was that the tank lip goes under the little frame bridge, where the original tank sits on top of the bridge.

Hmmyeah that's the trick isn't it... Problem is 18" wheels usually go with some rather hefty knobbies.

I've just had a look on mine: My 17" (worn down) TKC shod wheel has about 2 cm clearance, so an 18" wheel plus some fat enduro tyre might just squeeze in if you use a longer chain and put the wheel all the way at the far end of the swingarm, but this way you lose the ability to adjust your chain...

Or you'll have to lengthen the swingarm.

Some people say that, yeah. My take on it is that the XR and XL have the same engine, and they run high guards with no problem... Just make sure you get one that's vented at the rear end. (Acerbis Baja?)

    Re: Dommie Modding Questions

what happend to the xr650l and is the dommy any where near as good for gentle off road use
i had a xr650r a few years back but as you will know not road legal and the police up here dont tolerate illegal bikes
so i sold it back to the dealer was going to cost more than i could afford to make it legal
always wonderd if a dommy or slr would do the job

I did read on a page somewhere that fitting a high guard made the air flow under the tank to the airbox restricited and knocked some speed of. But if thats you air intake in the pic I guess its gonna breath OK
