problems with honda dominator (engine stalls)

    hi guys

I have a problem with my 1988 honda dominator. when is cold (few minutes after starting) he revs are low about 1000 rpm so i keep using the choke or throtle, to up the revs until the engine get hot and revs goes naturaly up to 1500rpm.

The problem is that it takes long time to warm the engine and during that time the bike stall frequently forcing me to ride the engin acelerated in revs to avoid that.

I ajusted the pilot screw few times, I have cleaned the carburator and change the stardard spark plug for the high performance ( iridium) one, but the problem is still there.

I don't know what else i can do, can someone give some advice?

    Regards

    Hi,
Try starting from cold with choke, but throttle revs up and get choke off quick. Immediately set Idle adjuster up a nudge until ticking over on it's own.
Wait about three minutes and then if need to, reduce idle speed till you feel it's sounding as you want!

My fmx was said to be 'fine', by my dealers, and honda said "there is no known problems of stalling with this engine"!!!! Yeah ok mr Honda -HA HA HA.
Mate check this forum out,I only joined recently and it has helped me recognize this common fault on my 2006 new fmx!!
Bikers on this forum are great help.
If i can live with the wife after 26 years then i can put up with my 'dommie-reincarnation/fmx having it's 'off' moments.
Possibly get air screw set up right, Big dommie fussy on correct setting with this carburettor
Big singles, can't live with them, can't live without them!!
    Good luck

check the underneath of the inlet manifold(black bit betwix carb and head) these are known to crack and cause a weak mixture.

My 89 Dominator was a pain for doing the same, checked the air filter ,whitch was missing put a new filter in ,never done it again.
    Cheers Ian.

Taking a long time to warm up would suggest a rich mix rather than weak to me. When you set the pilot screw have you tried this. With the carb set as per the manual, get the bike upto running temp. Set the tickover to 1500rpm, then screw pilot in or out in tiny stages till you achieve maximum revs. At that pilot setting re-adjust the tickover to 1500rpm.
Other than that, I'd check air filter too. Could be full of crap and restricting air flow at lower revs producing a rich mix on tickover.

    Best of luck
