    Front wheel removal tips ?

    Hi all
I have had the back wheel off myself and got a new tyre put on , I was not confident enough in my skills to do the tyre change myself , but I think I could swap out the tube for a new on if I really need to.

Anyway , the front is coming up for a new tyre soon , and I'll try and do it myself.

Anything I should know about taking off the front wheel ?
There seems to be a few things there to watch out for , the speedo cable won't be affected ?

Any tips would be appreciated thanks.

Re: Front wheel removal tips ?

There are some tips about front wheel removal in a previous post.... but anyway once the plastics are off there are a couple of things to note. 1) Your speedo cable kept in place by a screw...so remove this, then your cable detatches from the receiver on the wheel - make a mental note where the lug sits. 2) The 4 nuts which hold the spindle bracket are only tightened to 12 ft/lb (and that's nothing) - remember this when you reinstall or you'll shear the bolt - been there - done that The spindle itself doesn't just pull out ...it UNSCREWS ... we've had a few smiles with that one before ......I guess you've got the torques ?....Good luck Keef ! ....

I will give it a go.
    No torque wrenches though

    Keef,

I have had mine off and on a few times with no issues.

WRT front axle holder, I just use sensible force with a small ring spanner and have had no problems - then keep an eye on nuts after you ride it for a while.

Re: Front wheel removal tips ?

Thanks for the help , so let me see if I have this correct ?

Ok so I unscrew the little screw (phillips head) on the speedo cable and the speedo cable will just pull out ?

Then I undo the 4 nuts on the axle holder next ? And that will come off easily ?

Then the axle bolt will screw out ?

Then the wheel will slip out of the brake caliper ? Or should I remove the caliper ?

Yes - but you will also have to loosen/remove the clamp that holds the cable to the fork to get it out

    Yep

Then the wheel can be reomoved, with the disk coming out of the caliper without any problems.

Looking at the pictures you have posted elsewhere, your bike is exactly the same model as mine, so drop me a line anytime you have any (easy) questions

Yes the disc will slide out of the calliper, but be careful putting things back in as you will hit the pads and make it hard to line everything up. Also resist the urge to operate the brake lever when the wheels off. It's bloody hard to get those pads back to leave a gap

I've never disconnected the speedo to take the wheel out ever BTW. The worm drive will fall clear of the wheel and just dangle by the cable with no risk of harm.

I agree with squirrelcv re not touching the brake lever - very critical.

Leaving speedo intact is a good idea as well - makes it easier to put back together, less chance of loosing stuff etc
