    red downpipes

Washed the slr this afternoon decided to start it up and make sure the engine was properly dried out before putting it back under wraps again, left it running stationery outside shed, it was getting dark, came back 10 minutes later and someone had started painting the downpipes cherry red

    Um...
Leaving a big aircooled engine idling for 10 minutes isn't exactly the most brilliant thing to do, really.

    Re: red downpipes

Lean or not, most downppes will glow red if left in a draught free space whilst running the bike. Just think what is happening inside of the downpipes....remembering that not all fuel is burned up in the cylinder due to inefficiencies in piston/bore design.

I remember starting up my old CX500 90% through a rebuild (only had to put the exhaust back on...I was suprised to see the flames coming out of the cylinder head Mind you it was cool to watch at the same time!!!

    Heh.

I'll bet the old "gullepumpe" sounded a wee bit different as well.

I think thats normal on a dommie if you leave the engine running - mine used to do it and it was definetly not running lean.

Just dont do it too often.

    Re: red downpipes

I'd rather say don't do it period.

Get on, start the bike, (gently!) ride off. None of this leaving it idling to warm up business, the dommie is enough of a hothead already when there is air moving past the fins...
