    Speedo cable broke.

    Hi all
    My Speedo stopped working today
I just pulled the cable off and I assume if I put a small screwdriver in the wheel end and turn the other end should turn.
Is this a common failure ? The other end seems very hard to turn so I guess it has got tight and eventually worn through.

Are they a common part to replace ?

I've gone through two in about 9000 miles!

I also had the speedo gear wheel snap in half. You might want to check that. It's dead easy(!).
Get the front wheel off and then take off the speedo gear hub...inside is the plastic (!) gear wheel, if it's knackered a replacement from WEMOTO or david silver costs about £17.

Obviously you'll know if the cable is broken...just undo it from the speedo end and pull...if it comes out, it's broke.

    Good luck.

Ok thanks for the info, sounds like a common thing so I should be able to get one ordered from the local bike shop , I'm in Australia.
I hope the gear wheel is OK , might have a look at it tomorrow.

Yep, this happened to Dolly 3 times till I siliconed the outer. My cable rotted 3-4" up from the speedo drive and the reason is water can get past the rubber outer sleeve. I rolled it back and smeered some silicone then put it back. Also used the old cable stuffed in a drill and coming in from the bottom end to hone out the rust before oiling everything. If it's all apart I suggest you give it a go

    Thanks
the gear wheel seems to be OK , so I'll hopefully get a new cable this week and then seal it up when I put it on.

    Re: Speedo cable broke.

Just has the same problem. When I took the speedo drive off and cleaned it up everything seemed OK. I fitted it back but no speedo when I tried it. I took it off again and bent the tabs on the speedo drive washer (the bit still attached to the hub that drives round the nylon washer) inwards (ie towards the middleof the wheel) and timmed up the nylon washer a bit and low and behold I now have a working speedo. It lasted 250 miles round glorious Snowdonia yesterday so it seems to be fixed. Try this before lining Mr Hondas pockets with cash for bits that you might not need.
    Regards
    Basil

    Hi,
If anybody finds a source of these plastic gear wheels then please post it on the forum.

Dave Silver tells me that they are a discontinued item and they can't order them from Honda. My local bike shop have not been able to locate one either. I bought a complete speedo gearbox off ebay and that turned out to be as bad as the one I already have. Next step is to try and bend the tabs and cut a bit off the back of the gear to make it sit a little further into the worm drive but that is not likely to last too long.

    Cheers
    Mike

    Try these guys

    I bought mine from here.
They insisited it wouldnt fit my model ('99) becuase it was listed as a '96 model part, BUT it is exactly the same.
    About £17 'ish.

I bought mine around March this year.

    Smile Re: Speedo cable broke.

    Hi,
I went back on the Dave Silver site and ordered the one they are advertising for a T. As mine is a W I didn't give any details about the bike so they couldn't say it wouldn't fit. From the emails they have sent it looks like they are posting it out to me.

WEMOTO don't have any but John Oldfield says that he has some for an earlier model, cost £17.77 inc VAT, look for a code on it something like KF0.

I'll let you know if the one from DS fits and works. by the way DS are advertising a complete speedo gearbox unit for a T.

    Keep happy
    Mike

    Sounds promising.
I had the same thing from John Oldfield..."look for the code", he said; I couldn't find it, but insisted that they sell me one anyway!!

Let us know how it turns out, I sure it will be identical.
