I think you'll need more than an instruction manual. If I were you I'd order an actual repair manual. Those things are so useful they'll pay for themselves.
Oils - any decent 10W/40 API spec SE or better. If you go the semi-synth route make sure it's bike specific as car semi-synth has friction modifiers which can cause clutch slip (go on, ask me how I know!). Transmission shares the same oil as the engine which, at 2 litres a time, is why you should change every 1500-2000 miles.
Oh, and remember there's 2 drain plugs, one in the crankcase just forward of the gear shift, the other at the bottom of the tank/downtube.
Oh, and 2 screens, one by the clutch, one under the oil tank.
Oh yeah, you can only put 1 litre or so in the tank when you refill, so you put half the oil in, run the engine then top up with the other half.
If you're looking for a manual there's one available on-line here:
Click Me
Bottom of list on the left - click on Manual Download and there you go, section by section. OK so it's for the '91, but the differences are few and far between, it makes for a very good reference when attacking your bike with the spanners.
You're welcome.
Thanks heaps Kirriepete . I never heard of that one: "Engine and transmission sharing the same oil"
Just to get back on the viscosity : Here in eastern Australia the weather is pretty warm (hot) .Specially in summer . Would it be a good idea to run the engine with 20W/50 API aa the bike is a bit old (1989) ?
And........thanks for the advice!! Cheers
Only bike I've had in recent history with separate oil for the gearbox (not counting strokers of course) was my last BMW K100 with its completely separate 'box. Does that mean that all my earlier pre-unit Brits were as up to date as modern BMWs?
20W/50 will do just fine - if you check out the Lubrication section of the online manual you'll see that's actually the preferred option for sunnier climes.
You're welcome
Hi Ken , thanks for the tip , all under "control" now ...)
Cheers Jaap.
