Mine starts with about half choke and no throttle. Maybe worth a go.

hi i only got my 92 nx recently and it to was the same cold starting. I took the coil of the frame ( located above the spark plug) and sanded the surfaces back to clean metal and now it starts within a couple of seconds. While the tank is off replace the spark plug which always helps. Hope this helps fingers crossed for you
yeah...mine since i bought it early march have to always pull the choke lever for easy starts...
Best tip for starting an FMX is to switch off the fuel tap (with engine still running) when you park and let the bike stall when carb runs dry. This takes 1-2 minutes - usually by the time I've taken my jacket and helmet off. It's not necessary to do this unless the bike is being left overnight or longer.
This has saved me so much hassle and makes the bike a doddle to start - turn fuel on, full choke, no throttle and it always starts now within 10 seconds. Once started and running on choke, don't be tempted to give it full throttle, as this may stall the bike. I find 30 seconds of choke is enough in the summer, more in the winter.
This might not apply to the Dominator but certainly works for the FMX. At one point I was considering getting shot of the FMX, because of its starting problems, now it's one of the best starters I've ever owned!!

Had Miss Whiplash for just over 6 months now and I think I've got her startup routine down to a one or two push job:
1. Turn the fuel off before stopping - doesn't matter too much if you let it run dry, as long as some fresh fuel can get in.
2. ˝ choke only - that's to the détente 'click', full choke is only needed after leaving her out overnight in a Scottish winter. (I'm a cruel man at times!)
3. Clutch in - dragging the gearbox round makes a helluva difference.
4. No throttle.
5. Ride away - I knock the choke off once I've left the end of my road, no more stops at junctions for at least a mile in either direction.
Of course, I ripped out the knackered old Varta she was trying to use and replaced it with a Hawker Odyssey, but apart from that ....!
You're welcome.
Thanks for all the replys.
Replaced the plug tonight to find the old plug very white, not brown.
Checked the inlet manifold for air leaks, seems ok.
Tried to find airscrew on carb.
