    advice needed "written off" bike

Please can some one offer me some advice. I recently bought a slr and I thought I got a bargin ( well it is in good nick and engine sounds sweet ). Right heres the problem.. When the dvla sent me back the log book they also set a letter asking if I bought the Bike with tax on it ( which I had ) but according to there records it was un-taxed and not sorn so I though I would do a HPI check for piece of mind ( thinking it may be a stolen bike ) but it has turnt out that it is a category C write off ! from 2 months before I bought it and the log book wasnt ever sent back to the dvla to inform them of the situation. I know I should have done my homework before I bought the bike ( I have learnt a big lesson here ) but anyway the bike is fine and everything is straight and drives well and I can not see any evidence of any major repairs that have been made ( it is a 10 year old bike ) . The thing is from what I have been reading on the webbernet is that the dvla should not have issued me with the log book unless I showed a new MOT certificate ( but they did ) so Im very confused what I should do. Should I contact the dvla and ask them what the crack is or is the the norm ?. Thanks in advance.

    Categories Of Write-Off

An explanation of the categories of write-off are listed below:
Category A A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts. Category B A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road. Category C An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road. Category D A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road. Category F A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair. Theft These vehicles have not been recovered and ownership rests with the insurer who made the total loss payment. They are able to repossess the car as soon as it is identified, even if it has been bought innocently. Vehicles categorised as A, B or C require a VIC test before the DVLA will issue a new registration document. This will then be noted on the V5C. See www.dvla.gov.uk for more information on VIC testing.

thats from the AA website, seems a bit suspicious that DVLA did not know it was taxed as they issue the tax discs, but as for the write off thing well value of the bike £1000 max trade £600 so a set of fork stanchions headlight etc would soon add up with labour, if the tank was damaged you are looking at £300/£350 new, half way too the value already, so it most likely was not seriously damaged as above if it was cheap and you are happy then carry on, if there is a problem and you got it from a dealer then i reckon trading standards would be interested in the case

Thanks for the reply's guys. Think I will just keep a low profile as regards the dvla, But think I will have a chat with my insurance company just to put them in the picture ( but shouldn't they already know ). Cheers.

I have just bought a 2000 Dommie for 1050 exported it now to ireland.

I have the log book and it rides perfectly. If I was to find out it was a previous right off.... I would not lose a minutes sleep....

    Ride and enjoy.
