SLR choke

Hi

Just wondering about this one and if any other SLR/FMX owners have had similar problems...

Basically my idle isn't all that good and I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the choke?
So, I start in the morning with full choke the bike starts, coughs a little as if it has too much fuel for a moment, then runs perfectly well. I ride off and after a min or 2 I turn the choke off. Now when I come to a stop at traffic lights etc, the bike will only just idle and sometimes it dies. So I rev it up a little and then the idle is fine and runs a little faster. Sometimes the same thing will happen if I give the choke cable a little tug and then push it back into the handle again...

I've tried adjusting the idle higher, this stops the bike dying but then on other occassions I'll come to a stop and the bike will idle too high. The more I fiddle with the idle and choke cable the more confused I become!!

The bike has recently had a full service and other than this issue, runs perfectly well.

Re: SLR choke

Hmm yes my slr did this i found the carb slide was sticking i replaced the carb with a better one and it helped, but that carb had done 60.000 and i got a very good low mileage carb cheaper than buying bits for the original one, what i found also recently with the Vigor was the arm that lift the slide when the throttle os opened were seized in the open position it could be this sticking, also a great help with both bikes was fitting a dynojet kit,
So you could try digging the carb off and making sure all the parts operate smoothly and freely and the diaphragm is ok

Re: SLR choke

Thanks Mervinh, I was hoping it wasn't going to lead to me having to do something like this having never taken carb's apart before! Also not having any sort of manual for this bike is a pain. Due to my lack of experience I don't think I'd be able to fit a dynojet kit myself either, leading to a big cost getting it set up correctly.

The choke cable I ordered happened to be the wrong one too, annoying coz before I had the bike serviced it seemed to have settled itself and for the past couple of weeks the idling has been absolutely fine. The shop tells me my current cable is absolutely fine anyway but I'm not sure how much to believe them. I might get onto that website you mentioned previously and just get the choke and accelerator cables replaced myself.

Also, this carb slider - is it anything to do with the choke plunger connection on the carb? Perhaps if I firstly made sure the plunger acted smoothly that might make a difference??

Re: SLR choke

Yup a bit daunting if you have not done this type of thing before
maybe worth tipping a can of carb cleaner in the fuel tank first
the dynojet kit is not too bad to fit once you can strip the carb it is fairly straightforward and i just set it as per the instructions and everything seems fine Pity you are in sheffield as i would come around one day and give you a hand to remove and clean carb to see if it would help, but a bit of a long way
from me 4 or 5 hours drive, now i did meet a nice young lady from sheffield a few years ago,( a cousin of a freind) but she got married, that spoilt that relationship that did, oops the missus is not far away

Re: SLR choke

Lol, I'll not ask more about THAT relationship then! Thanks for thinking you could pop round, maybe I'll travel down your way one day, though the SLR might start to be painful once I reach Birmingham!!

When you say carb cleaner, do you mean that Redex stuff? Coz I've got some of that left from 2 bikes previously!! I'll try that then... shouldn't do any harm either way.

Worst thing is I've now got a 3 month old girl (not actually having her, she's gorgeous! lol) and I also use my bike for work every day, I'm a bit lost getting to work without it! So inbetween all this it's very difficult finding time to spend sorting the bike out, most weekends involve family visits and day trips out in the car!!

yes try the redex but i have just dug out my old SLR carb and it was seized like the FX one and will need stripping to clear it i think so if you can live with it fair enough if not it maybe a case for surgery

Re: SLR choke

Thanks for the help Mervinh.

I remember you said you have a manual for the SLR, does it have any pic's of the carb and sliders etc that you might be able to scan for me? It could help me understand what I'm looking at on the bike!

Also, that seized carb you have for the SLR - would you be interested in selling it and sending it up to me?

I'm finding the idling worse at the moment, I've increased the idle via the knob on the left of the bike but it still goes from sometimes almost stalling, to idling too high. If I'm travelling at the same speed for a while I can also notice the bike doesn't just sit at that speed, it does little jumps like it keeps slowing down, speeding up etc... I'm waiting to fill the tank up before adding Redex, in the next day or 2.

Re: SLR choke

Sounds as though it would benefit from a strip down and good cleaning
i only had idle problems not the ones when moving there are several pages of carb stripdown in the manual will try to scan em and email them later if you can pm me your email addy
will have a look at the carb and clean it up as it is very grubby will strip it and get it up too the best i can then see if it is any good , i will then send you that carb you fit it and see if it any better and you can send me the one of your bike and i will go torugh that one fior you, as i have a small sonic bath i can do a fairly good job
