    Dominator Standard Exhaust Mods ?

Has anybody tried opening up the Dominator standard exhaust cans to get them flowing a bit more freely (and sounding a bit throatier !).

I used to own an XJR1300 and there was a German company that made a gizmo with instructions that you could drill out the pop rivets and open up the end of the can and fit a larger, more straight through exit pipe. They sounded fine, not much louder, just a little throatier and importantly, no 'fluffing'.

    Any ideas most appreciated ....

I have been thinking about doing the same on my SLR. problem is the cans on the slr are welded at the ends so i would have to cut the end caps off and make new ones that i would screw or pop rivet on. the new end caps i would make with interchangeable inserts so i could mess around with different sizes of exhaust pipe. a wee bit nervous about cutting the caps off though in case i screw up the can . i would love to see inside the can first though, but alas no x ray vision, so i will just have to go for it. have access to a machine shop so the manufacture of new bits is not a problem. if your can has rivets then go for it and have a look, easy enough to rivet it back on if it doesnt look feasable.

    Great minds think alike.
Been thinking about this for a while. My 96 Domi has some rivets which look to be holding the shiney end on only.

    Who's going in first then?

I reckon Starfazer should go first .... he's got the use of a machine shop ... and anyway .... I'm scared !

With the XJR the company I got my gizmo for gave full instructions of how to fit the thing including a piccy that showed the inside of the can (The XRay that Starfazer is talking about !).

Just think Starfazer, you could be the man that produces the gizmo for the Honda Thampers ! You could be a hero ... and a millionaire by next week ! What an opportunity for fame, stardom and wealth !

Have I talked you into it yet !?

Must be so easy when you've got a machine shop to play in.
Good luck and show us the results please.

Re: Dominator Standard Exhaust Mods ?

    Hello All,
    Starfazer,
Only just got signed up - I have been looking at doing the same thing on my 1993 Dominator -I have looked at your proposals for your SLR ,Starfazer, looks good .I have never taken a four stroke exhaust apart before ,but I'm familiar with the typical 2 stroke tailpipe construction -not sure whether it will be much different internally ?
I'm assuming the final exit tube you will be fitting will be perforated along the tube length ,or will it be plain -and will this tube then have some form of packing around between it and the outside of the exhaust ?Will the end of this tube just 'float' within the outer can ,or will it have any support towards the engine end ?
Is the SLR end can the same as the Domi ,( Pressed Mild steel ) or is it a more fancy 'non ferros' ?
I too have access to a machine shop/fabrication ,so like you ,making bits is not an issue -very privileged !!
If you do the mod ,let me know how you get on ,
    Cheers
    Steve

Re: Dominator Standard Exhaust Mods ?

Hi there, i will not know the exact manufacturing method required for the final exit tube until i get the end of the can cut off, a bit more tricky on the slr as the end can is actuall swaged on and secured with a tack weld. looks like i can grind of the folded over end and the back plate with the exit tube should slide out, then i will remake these parts, think its a bit easier on the dommie as the end is riveted on. i will take step by step picture as i am doing it.

Re: Dominator Standard Exhaust Mods ?

Cheers for the reply - the Domi tailbox sounds the same type of design as the SLR -the bit that is rivetted is only a trim ,looks like i would have to cut out the end of the silencer out as you will have to !

    Hi starfazer,

That looks pretty impressive, if you are able to make it and then tune the system for optimum performance, i would be interested in buying a conversion kit from you. Thats if you want to make two sets, of course!

    Cheers,
    Rob
