    Question Chain tension

Hi all, just cleaned and lubed the chain after a rear shock/swing arm change. Chain is in good condition, as are the sprockets, I know you should measure the slack mid-way between the sprockets but is that on a paddock stand or on the ground?, I have found different amounts of "slack" when checking using these 2 methods. I suppose I am asking should the bike be "loaded" when measuring or just sat on the side stand?. I noticed the ride today was fine but when I checked the chain it seemed quite tight. Thanks in advance, just want to hear what you guys do with respect to this adjustment.

    Re: Chain tension

I use a paddock stand when checking mine which is another angle to add.

Manual says "with bike on it's side stand, 30mm-40mm slack".

    Need a manual?

    Re: Chain tension

The swinging arm movement effects the chain tension depending on the geometry of the mounts and the front sprocket, the manual should give the tension (or slack) required to give freedom throughout the whole travel and should be adjusted on the side stand.
Err on slack side as too tight will damage the chain, sprockets, gearbox ect once you know the correct tension on the side stand then take a note of the freeplay when on the centre stand for the next adjustment.

I do believe the manual mentions the chain slack is to be measured with the unladen bike resting on it's side-stand.

Much appreciated, good, useful replies!. Now sorted and happy with the correct "slack".
