Bike cuts out when stopping at lights

Now I know we've had a fair few threads regarding rough running SLR's recently, some of them being my own! I've managed to put it down to my carb's icing when the temperature is low and it's foggy. Adding Pro FST to my tank has since stopped all that and the bike has been running great again.... until now.

Yesterday I ran the tank pretty low then filled it to the brim with petrol and didn't have chance to add any Pro FST. This morning the weather is pretty grim, drizzly and misty - if the temperature had been low I would have made sure to add Pro FST but I thought since it's a lot warmer (about 8 degrees celsius) I won't need to. Then on the way into work the bike start cutting out when I come to a stop and stuttering a tiny bit when pulling away.... so can carb icing occur even in warmer weather!?

I've worked on cars with the air box off in the cold weather and you can see the ice forming around the needle and jet sometimes.
How about you put some Pro FST and let us know how you get on.

Might be that the carb's membrane is damaged. Either that or your air filter is clogged. Another possibility is a faulty connection somewhere that lets extra air in. The symptoms coincide in both cases.

Oh, you *DID* warm up the engine, right? My Dommie never has any stalling issues unless I close the chocke too early (i.e. before the engine has had a chance to warm up).

Yeah warm up was done, I always start my bike on my drive then leave it warming up for a min or 2 whilst I get my gear on and shut the garage behind it - plus this was also happening over a 30min journey.
Well I added the Pro FST last night and lo and behold this morning the bike was absolutely fine again, althought the weather is better (clear and dry) so I'll have to wait for more yucky foggy, drizzling weather to confirm the problems definitely go away when the Pro FST has been added - I'm sure I won't have to wait long!

I did have a rather embarrassing stall after getting to the front of a set of lights though, for some bizarre reason I saw the lights change and my left hand let the clutch straight out whilst my right hand didn't give any rev's and my foot remained firmly on the brake! Come one guys, you're supposed to work together to get this thing moving!!

Im in exactly the same boat. Brought some FST and has cured the carb icing but today didn't put any in as its getting warmer. She was running really crap, so stopped at the side of the road and put some in and then she ran beautifal all day.

Sounds to me like mot using this FST after a period of usage is bad for the engine. Am I right?

Also, what do you guys mean by 'cold' weather?

I don't know. It could still be the chilly weather...

Re: Bike cuts out when stopping at lights

I'm doubting Pro FST is actually bad for the engine at the mo since it is recommended in so many places (forums/bike shops/garages etc). I reckon more likely it's just because the weather is still quite cold and more importantly when its damp, misty weather.

Initially when the problem started occuring for me the temperature was between -2 and +1 and I was having to ride in freezing fog. Recently the temp has jumped to between 4 and 8, but still problems occured when it was misty/foggy. The times I didn't have Pro FST in my tank and it was freezing temperatures, and I didn't have any prob's was when the weather was dry and sunny or crisp. So, Watson, I deduce from this that when the temperature is 'freezing to cool' and the air is 'damp and moist' and you don't have Pro FST in your tank, you're likely to have bikers grumbles!

I wonder if wind chill has anything to do with your running problems? I tried FST for the first time a couple of weeks ago & it solved my carb icing problems! But if the temperature is around 4C it still doesn't run as well (without FST) as it has done now the temperature is a bit warmer. I have found though that super unleaded does improve the situation.

I've only ever poured super into it. Although when the warmer weather comes I probally won't.
