    Tyre change time.

    Hi everyone,

Well, its tyre change time for me and i was wondering if any of you have any reccomendations for the SLR. I'm currently running Metzeler tourance's front and rear, but now i need to change front and rear, so could be a good opportunity to change to something better.

I do a lot of long distance motorway riding, so high mileage capability is a must. My tyres have squared right off now, the back after 6000 miles.

    Cheers,
    Rob

    Re: Tyre change time.

How strange - I've come to the same point on my SLR too, only need a rear tyre though. I've still got the Bridgestone Trail Wings on it, the bike has covered 15k but I've only had it for the last 3k so I'm not sure if it is the original or not - doubt it! The rear has completely squared off to the min tread indicators now though...

I've made a list of tyres and their prices for the SLR rear and ended up choosing the Avon Distanza tyres, they have pretty good reviews and seem well road adjusted and rounded for my commute whilst still looking part slick/part off road. my local shop will fit and balance the tyre for £72 and I'm getting that done this weekend.

The Tourances were my other choice but expensive and reviews indicated the rubber wears quickly - how did you find them on the SLR then?

Here's my list if it helps! I'm no expert so take it all with a handful of salt..

Bridgestone Trail Wing - Too square possibly
    £60.99 - intobikes.co.uk
    £65.24 - gear4bikes.com
    £71 - thevisorshop.com
    ---
    Michelin Anakee's - possibly 130/90 instead of 120/90
Bit slick but like the look, expensive
    £78 - intobikes.co.uk
    £71.95 - tyresalesuk.co.uk
    £70.00 - motorcycletyres.uk.com (130)
    £81.00 - motobins.co.uk (130)
    ---
    Metzeler Tourance
Decent tyre, looks good, wears quicker and expensive
    £72.99 - intobikes.co.uk
    £72.00 - motorcycletyres.uk.com
    ---
    Continental Escape
Look good, reviews not so good though
    £56.99 - ijdmotorsport.co.uk
    £59.95 - tyresalesuk.co.uk
    ---
    Avon Distanzia
More slicky but look pretty good
    £56.99 - intobikes.co.uk
    £59.80 - tyresite.com

Wow, that list is a help thanks! My experience of the Tourance's has been quite good really. I changed the rear just after Christmas, and it has already worn down to the wear markers and beyond! I do 2000 miles a month though, and apparantly 6000 miles from a rear tyre isnt that bad.

I had one little slide from the front in the wet going round a roundabout, nothing too serious, but it was a little scary at the the time. Other than that i've found them to be fantastic. Always have loads of grip, after they are warm of course. Before that i'm always a little cautious when cornering.

I've heard good things about the Michelins, but may look into the Avons a bit more now that you've mentioned them.

My local shop has quoted me £150 for a pair of Tourances, fitted and balanced. Quite expensive in my opinion.

Well going on the price of the rear above, the front is probably £60 ish so I don't think you're getting too bad a deal. However I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure I saw a set of Tourances for sale on Ebay recently for £110 for front and back inc p&p. Could have been Distanzia's though! lol

Another local bike shop near me quoted £25 to fit a tyre to a bike and balance it, that was just 1 tyre so bear that in mind too!

    Re: Tyre change time.

I have got Metzeler Lasertec's on my FX...

Seem a good tyre, grips well in any weather and still offers plenty of grip on dirt track roads.....

Just not the best in thick mud...
