    Hy there from Bulgaria

I have absolutely same sound on my Dominator, today I adjusted the valves but the sound still. Only first few minutes after running the engine and this tight metal sound appearing few minutes later the engine working like rubber.

Stelladragon, please provide information when you are ready with camchain and tensioner and have any difference.

    Thank you advance

    Peter

Re: Noisy engine ... with Video!

I've got the exact same problem with my bike (honda nx 500 dominator) which is almost the same as the 650 cc.
Two months ago i decided to take the engine appart and solve this problem and also the problems i had with oil consumption and a leak at the head gasket. i was surprised when inspecting the parts because i couldn't find any traces of excessive wear or damage. I measured everything and all the parts were ok except the piston rings which i changed.
The conecting rod had almost no play, also the metal cilinder that conects it to the piston (i don't know how it's called). I measured the piston and it was within the limits mentioned in the shop manual. The cam chain tensioner only turns in one way on it's axle so i guess it's ok.
I also cleaned thoroughly the piston head and the combustion chamber because there was excessive carbon build up and i did the valve seats. I also changed the o-ring from the right crank case cover and checked the oil pump (there was oil splashing out of it when hand turning the crank shaft so i guess it works fine). finally i adjusted the valve clearences as specified and started the engine.
It doesn't consume oil any more and there is no leak but the noise is still there although now it doesn't last more than a few minutes after the cold start. I WOLUD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHERE IT COMES FROM. I hope my experience is helpfull

I'm 99% sure that the noise coming from your cam chain tensioner, just replace them and your bike will work lilke new.

I think you may be right. Perhaps the spring of the tensioner is loose and it takes a while untill it tensions the chain the way it should. it puzzles me though because i inspected the cam chain tensioner as written in the repair manual and it's shaft only turns clockwise which means that it permanently tensions the cam chain without the possibility of letting it loose.
Have you changed the tensioner on your bike?

Most Honda's have a problem with the cam chain tensioners....

CBR's, VTR's are perhaps the worst...

When the CCT goes on my VTR (Which it will...they all seem to eventually) I will fit manual tensioners....

At least that way, they cant back out at all...

    one more question:
the chain tensioner is composed of 3 parts:
    -the spring
-the part which tensions the chain
    -the axle
the tensioner complete with the spring but without the axle is aprox 80 euro. should i buy the axle too? (i couldn't see any traces of wear on mine)

You need to replace only tensioner, the spring and axel is ok, you can see on the pic here what you need to buy: http://lh3.ggpht.com/EL23971/R3mCgxK...0/IMG_0642.JPG

Re: Noisy engine ... with Video!

Hi there, i was wondering, the workshop manual mentions a special tool to hold the cam chain tensioner in place, is this tool really necessary? Mines the FMX, with the same noise, it's strange really as it seems to be an a noise frequency
of annoyance, i mean, it seems to travel through your helmet to your ears above any other sound from combustion, i did a bodge once on an old CB100, took the head of, drilled a hole straight through to the cam chain running cavity and made my own adjuster which put pressure directly on the tensioner guide, i threaded the drilled hole 7mm so could turn a screw in slowly until the noise stopped, lasted for years, but don,t advise it!!!! Them were the days of little cash! - metamorph67
