Re: Noisy engine ... with Video!

i'll only start working on it in the winter cause now i'm using it every day and if i let it warm up in the morning untill the sound dissapears i don't think i'm risking anything.
i've come to the conclusion that the problem comes from the cam chain which is too loose and the tensioner can't do it's job when cold because there is too much slack. i'm 99% sure that if i cange the tensioner and chain there will be no knocking.
sometimes i think of leaving it like it is but at some point i'll have to sell it and i don't think anyone would buy a bike with a rattling engine

You don't have to take the head off but you will if you want to change the forward chain guide. You may be able to get a good look at it to see what condition it's in with a torch.

    Good hunting and take pics.

I just changed the cam chain last week and by holding it against the old one it was probably half a centimetre shorter (which means 1 cm shorter if you open it up). I haven't started the bike yet because i'm still waiting for the right cover gasket and carburetor insulator (which is awfully expensive btw). I also chenged the chain tensionner spring and i am very curious whether it will rattle any more.

Difference between cold and warm can be due to metal expanding and fill any tolerances or it could be the oil....

Do you have a particularly thick oil in there at the moment, perhaps used during the colder months?

That might be an over-simplistic suggestion, but....
