Thinking of buying FMX650 Help??

Hi There,

Im thinking of buying a FMX650, I was going to buy a XR400 but I think the FMX may be better for work(which is the only riding I do) can anyone give me some pointers as I've never really thought of this bike as an option.

Cheers

Martin

do it a, fine commuter bike i reckon, though never having rode an fmx i have had /have both of it,s predecessors the SLR and the vigor, are you buying new or s/hand, if second hand walk away from anything with top end rattles,
they are very susceptible too being run short of oil but a well serviced looked after one will run forever and a day,

Re: Thinking of buying FMX650 Help??

I've ridden the XR a few times and have owned an FMX for a couple of years. The FMX is definately the better commuter. Although the seats are similar, not suitable for much more than 20 miles, the FMX is a lot smoother to ride and has more low down torque or least it feels that way. Fuel consumption commuting isn't brilliant (50mpg is typical) and the tank range is pathetic, running onto the sizeable reserve at about 80 miles. A CB500, F650 or Vstrom would easily get more than 60mpg.

I bought mine pre-reg for £3500 and they seem to hold their value reasonably and mine has been rock solid reliable. Starting is very reliable, especially if you turn the fuel off, with engine running for 30 seconds at the end of a run (no need to do this unless you are leaving the bike for a few days). And never use the throttle when starting from cold.

Build quality is pretty good, no rust so far and I'm not that careful about cleaning it. Cleaning is a bit of pain, lots of crud gets spraying onto the engine when riding in the rain.

All-in-all a good bike, maybe not the ideal commuter, but I still like it.

Re: Thinking of buying FMX650 Help??

Well I commute on an SLR and have done for the past 8 months or so. One thing I notice against other bikes is a) just how much quicker it is to get to 60mph and b) just how thin it is. I can't remember the number of times I've caught up with other bikers filtering because they can't quite fit through the gaps.

Downside is the stupidly small tank, having to fill up every 75-80 miles to ensure I don't have to use the reserve. I filled it up initially and just ran it until it started stuttering and I had to switch to reserve at about 90ish miles. Only other thing is the top speed, getting from 70 upwards takes a little longer than most other bikes... I'm thinking when it's time to replace the chain and sprockets I'll change the sizes to get a better top speed. I don't think missing a bit of acceleration lower down would make a huge difference.

Can't say anything about the XR400 though coz I've never ridden one, sorry!

Beanfeast when you change your sprockets change the rear one, i tried changinf the front one on my FX for a larger one recently and the chain is too close too the engine for the metal guard and sprocket cover to fit bak on
