Dominator 89 carb remove and clean with pics

    Hi friends!

I always wanted to make a clean to carburetor! but afraid of doing something wrong I never did't! But today it got brave and put to work! Based on information learned in this excellent forum and the Haynes manual, I start my adventure.

I thought of making a cleaning / check the carburetor for the following reason! The dommie in low rpm , easly stall, and only with choke and some gas I resolve ! Recently my bike went to my mecanic to change the insulator, tension chain, guides, valvue check ! So i begun to question the carb, so here it go !

    1-Take Off the thank
    2-Seat

Remove the choke cable ! (Carfull plastic screw)

Here it is when off !
Check the insulator for cracks !! My older one was completed open!!

    Choke needle!

    Remove the cables !

    Remove the tubes
Unscrew this one to remove the gas from inside carb

PS- i was unable to remove the 3 screw's from insulator and the carb must cames out from back. I've had to remove the airbox case!

    After take out carb!
I've start to disassemble the carb!
    Unscrew the 4 screw's

Voila! This is what you find after open

    Slide this one

Raise it ! Slow ! Check how it works to assemble after

    Check this little fellow

Now the Pilot Screw ! (My is a little bad shape, last owner has done this job )
Now important ! Count the number of turns and write it down! Because You should put'it in the same position after assemble

Here it is out ! Check for damage and clean it !

This screw is the one to dump the gas
    Clean it

Jet needle time ! Remove it ! Clean it and clean it and clean it !

    Little holes !!

Another jet ! Do the same ! Take out !Clean everything

    There it is !

Now ! On the other side remove the 4 screw's and remove the cover SLOWLY

    Inside, remove this 2 screw's

Outside slide this one! And clean it very well! This was the problem of my dommie! this was stuck!!!

On the side of carb !
Remove the 2 screw's careful on bottom is a spring! Don't damage the diaphragm

    Clean Clean clean!

    Good job !!!
Now clean every whole the best you can ! You can use compress air the clean ! with careful!
    Put every back on !
    And good rides !!!!!!!

This was my experience! I'm not a mechanic! so do your things at your own risk !

Thanks ! Hope this help in something !!

PS- Sorry for my English, I'm from Portugal !!

Thanks for a great post, I know there are many Dominator owner who have had the stalling problem and I've seen other posts with suggestions of how to fix it. Nice work with the photos they really do help, interesting that you found a seized part and I seem to remember reading that on this site before. I'm going to try altering the fuel mixture first but will check for the seized part. Well done again and thanks for the effort to help others.

    Regards

Re: Dominator 89 carb remove and clean with pics

    Quick bump on this thread.

First of all, big thumbs up for taking the time to post and do the piccies. It certainly helped a lot when I took the carb apart yesterday!

That slide that runs on the throttle cam was seized........as it seems is everyone elses!

Now, I had to have a mooch to find out what it was for. It seems to be a lifter for the needle so is a vital piece of the carb.

    Now......this is the offending bit.......

When its seized the needle won`t go down any further than this:

Obviously the poor bike is well over fuelled.............

After freeing the slide it looks like this:

Now.......there was one other issue I picked up on.

The slide is held with a circlip which sits on a nylon washer:

Obviously, the position of this is vital so the lifter arms are dead level under the diaphragm. However, I noticed that the lifters seemed a bit too far to the left: (not the best piccy for detail)

I reckon I need another washer on the slide to pull the arms level. Maybe something for folks to check when the carbs in bits.......

Its a bit rubbish that this arm seems to be a major point of failure but thanks to Rui for making me aware of it

I`d love to report that the bike is running perfectly but at the mo the engine is in the garage, the frame is in the shed and the carb is in the kitchen!

    Hi Mart!
Thanks for your words, I'm now having some serious problems with gas consumption ! My Dommie drinks like hell !!! I don't now if I assemble something wrong. In the first week everything ok, but after problems start to appear again! When you mention the needle don't go down, I'm beginning to think if it is now my problem? I've checked everything else and seems to be ok Is there any thing that i can do to the needle become more "loose"

    Thanks
    Rui

Re: Dominator 89 carb remove and clean with pics

I noticed I had some wear on the side of the needle so that needs replacing, maybe yours isn`t seating perfectly true? Mind you, I got the impression that you were very thorough with the carb overhaul so I`d assume that something as basic as that would have been the first thing to be checked!

I`ve been hunting round and can get some nylon washers for pence so will have to experiment to see if a second washer will pull the lifter arm across to get it sitting centrally.

Rui, I wish I could suggest a cast iron solution mate, it seems the least I could do after your brilliant post but unfortunately I know as much about carbs as I do about sericulture!
