    flywheel removal

    hi guys has anyone removed the flywheel on there dominator fmx etc, i have to change my starter clutch , in the manual they use a special tool to stop it from spinning but i don't have access to this tool an rather than buying one just for one job , is there a cheaper tool on the market or another method of locking the flywheel to undo the nut without damaging it . any advice would be greatly appreciated ..

    edit ;
    i found a thread where someone had used a nylon ratchet strap rapped round the flywheel a few times so the bolt is now out ,now i just need the thread size for the fly wheel puller any one know the size ? or a bolt off something else which would do the same job ?

    Re: flywheel removal

    Sorry, Not had any experience on these bikes doing that.
    I have a flywheel puller but it has three arms which are used to grab it and a bolt in the middle which you turn to pull it off. I think this is a different tool than the one you are looking for. I do remember having one that screwed in the centre which I had for a fsie many many years ago. i just had a look but cant find it. I'll keep looking though.

    Where did you get your workshop manual from I've been looking for one with no success.

    hi pash , yeah its the type of tool that screws in the centre of the flywheel , i may have to try a traditional puller if i cant find a bolt to fit , regards to the manual i downloaded it off the net a few years ago believe there's a link to it on this site

    XS650 Layshaft. That's what I use - I think it's M22 but not sure of the pitch. It will need to be a hardened bolt too. A 3-legged puller is generally not man enough for the job as the flywheels tend to be stuck on really tight.

    Re: flywheel removal

    Flywheel puller - £22 from Silvers - at that price it's worth buying, it's a multi-fit tool so it will always come in handy.

    Flywheel locker (to undo the centre nut) - a wee bit more from Silvers! - dunno about you, but I can't justify that sort of expense, so I just used a strap wrench and some old towelling to wedge the flywheel in position.

    You're welcome

    When i removed mine on my xr400 i screwed the oil filter bolt from a 250 superdream into the centre hole and then smacked the head of the bolt with a big hammer and the shock made the flywheel jump off

    Hi
    You can buy a drawer but I used a wheel stud from a truck These are a standard size and threadon 95% of HGV trucks, I think its about 22mm but just screw it in the flywheel and turn it tight with some grips or stilsons and tap the flywheel and it comes off.

    thanks for all the info guys .
    Ive now removed the flywheel just awaiting the arrival of the new starter clutch ($75AUD) an gasket ($20AUD) from Honda , so with the aid of a cheep Chinese ratchet strap ($16AUD) an a lorry/truck wheel stud,, 22mm x 1.5 thread (free from a friendly truck mechanic ) thanks for the info on that kenny1950 . its turned out to be a relatively cheep an simple job, the parts should be hear today, ill let you know how i go putting it back together .
