    Single exhaust and link pipe

    Hi All,

As above really. A friend of mine has an FMX and he's modified his standard end cans to make the bike a lot louder. It sounds really good, and i now want to put a single exhaust on my SLR. I understand that i will also need a link pipe.

[MOD EDIT, advert removed - Non subscribed member]. I thought about modifying my end cans but i'd rather keep them standard for the MOT and resale.

I also know that i will have to up-jet the bike. Does anyone have any idea what i should try putting in it? I dont really want to go the whole hog and dynojet it, mainly for money reasons.

    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

re: Single exhaust and link pipe

Does that exhaust come with the link pipe and everything to connect it to the headers?

    Cheers.

    Just the tailpipe i'm afraid.
It was originally off a Dommie.I was going to get a link pipe made for my XR,but I've sorted something else.
The link pipe can be made up by an exhaust company pretty cheaply, its only 2 bends.

A word of advice about a direct exhaust for the SLR: after you install the new (empty I guess) exhaust, you'll want to richen the mixture (turn the carb screw) a bit and that's about it...

No it isn't. Turning the screw just changes the idle mixture. It does approximately nothing for the midrange and top end mixture. Ideally you'd put it on a dyno and get it sorted properly, the same can be achieved on a quiet backroad with a bit more work (depending on how reachable the carb is on the SLR)

Re: Single exhaust and link pipe

Yes i'm aware that i would have to re-jet the carb, i would probably go by checking the plug colour and going up gradually with the jet sizes until i get it right.

Daz Max, i will have to get back to you about the can you have there. Ideally i want to find a link pipe as well, and not have to get one made up for myself.

    Thanks!

I wasn't referring to the easily-accessible idle-screw. I was talking about the oh-so-hard-to-get-to mixture screw. Re-jetting might be a little extreme...

Re: Single exhaust and link pipe

There is no mixture screw other than the one for idle...

There's also the idle speed, but that is just a stopper to up the revs and it doesn't do anything with the mixture. (On the dommie this is on the right side, the idle mixture screw is directly down on the bottom of the carb, and indeed hard to reach.)

Anyway. It's up to everybody for themselves if they want to re-jet or not. Just don't have any illusions that the little mixture screw does anything at all other than at idle.

Re: Single exhaust and link pipe

I was always under the impression that if you increase airflow by changing the exhaust system, you will have to rejet to compensate for the weaker mixture. My dad has had a lot of problems jetting his bike correctly and the way that he explained it to me was that the main jet deals with the top of the rev range and the mixture screw with the bottom. So if i didnt rejet it would be running too weak at the top end i would have thought.

    Cheers,
    Rob
