unwanted fmxs

recently i've been trying to sell my fmx but it has been for sale for 5 months and there hasn't been much interest. i was worried it may be the price, which i think is fair for the bike and have been willing to negotiate. i looked on ebay and they dont seem to be many bids being made for them either.

am i right in thinking these bikes aren't in production any more due to lack of demand and do i have an unsellable bike. its in perfect condition, 08 plate and low milage. is anyone else having the same problem at all. its advertised everywhere. or is it just because of the current economical situation

ps apologies for poor typing, my shift keys broken

Re: unwanted fmxs

Well, the FMX wants to be a small time fun-bike.

I say small-time because it's not really a fun-bike: a 650cc engine (that dates back to the 80s!) that only gives 39HP. Less-than-responsive fuel injection. A bit on the heavy side (175kg ready to go). Stiff supermoto seat. Sub-optimal lighting. Less-than-attractive design (compared to modern SMs).

So it's indeed a small-time bike. Sure, the engine will go for 80k, but whoever wants a supermoto is likely to one-wheel it all the time and won't care too much about long term reliability.

And never mind the rugged Dominator frame which can take anything short of a train or loaded lorry. That won't help it on the street.

IMO the FMX was a bad call - it's not designed for any kind of touring (I wouldn't ride more than 40 miles on that board of a saddle) and it's much to heavy and slow for a city fun bike.

It also can't take any luggage and has a tiny "fill-me-up-every-other-day" fuel tank. One can easily buy a supermoto-equipped dominator for 2000 quid and outperform the FMX, despite being 8-10 years older.

What price were you looking to ask for it? Last FMX in Romania (2005 model) went for 5000euro last month. That's less than 4000quid. For a brand-new bike.

Re: unwanted fmxs

Its currently up for 3k and is absolutely spotless.

Tbh I know its a bit of a niche bike but I've had loads of fun with it. Its more comfortable than most SMs I've ridden and a little more relaxed but with enough power to still have fun. My friend had an xr650 which I almost bought instead but it had a horrible tendancy of shredding tyres. Its affordable and I think it looks pretty good. I've had alot of compliments on it. When it came back from the garage, most of the bikers there loved it. The test pilot said it was the most fun he'd had in years.

If your desperate for power theres kits u can buy from Germany which can boost it to near 50hp. The engine is basic but pretty tuneable and easy to maintain. KTMs might be more fun but the amount of maintanence is astronomical.

I know practicalitys never going to be an argument in any SM discussion but as far as they go, this one is as practical as they get.

Re: unwanted fmxs

major downer on the FMX there Switch. I take it you are not a fan.
I have done 227miles in a sitting on mine, so touring is possible.

Blinx, there's not much money floating around just now, my sister and her boyfriend have both been told they are being made redundant before year end.

I'm not being rude so please don't take it that way, but why would someone buy your bike for £3000 when they can pick up the same spec bike (not changed in 3-4yrs) with maybe only 1k more miles for £2000.

When it comes right down to it, why would anyone spend that much money when their jobs may not be so secure any more. It's just a bad time to sell a bike. However if you are a buyer with cash there are lots of deals to be had with people like yourself who are getting desperate to sell.

know i would be tempted to go for the cheaper one.

I would suggest hanging on to it for longer if you can afford to. Either that or prepare to drop the price considerably

I apologize if it seemed rude, but in my view - it's the truth. I'm actually a huge fan of the dommie series but the latest model was defenetly not what I expected.

sbikerbud is spot-on in one aspect in particular: hanging on to the bike is the way to go, unless you need the cash. Right now you're highly unlikely to get that cash for it.

Re: unwanted fmxs

na its cool i realise the situation and i think holding onto it for a while till things improve is the best idea. just seems crazy that i bought it last august for 3300 and hav done 1k on it and its dropped in value that much. still all part of the game i guess.

so switch is there really that much diff between the two. i would have thought the engine wud behave relatively the same and maybe just a difference in handling and comfort

Well new bikes loose a LOT of their value in the first year.

As a sidenote I'd buy your bike if you lived next door :P

Re: unwanted fmxs

hehe cheers mate. yea they do, was kinda tempted to save up and spend some cash on bits but i'm still wondering whether its worth it or not. i think pipes and air filters might be a nice minimal. would be nice to make a little more noise so people will stop saying, wow thats nippy for a 125.......don't ask, it happens alot funnily enough

Re: unwanted fmxs

I would keep the bike for a while tbh...

Now is not really the time to sell anything...

All I would do if you really want to sell it is to put an ad in the local paper or something (cheap or free ideally)
Then if someone does want to spend out on it, you might sell it....

Good luck either way....
