    Dommie cuts out?!

Hello to all. I'm a newbie with a Dominator (bought it weekend) it's a great bike, nice and comfy etc etc. The problem is is when i'm changing down gear very occaionly it will cut out, like someone had just turn't the ignition off. No warning,no coughing or spluttering just dies. I went out for a long ride yesterday and it did it twice ( once halfway round a roundabout) hit the starter button and away we go again. It's very strange. I've been told it's been stood a while so i'm going to drain and clean the carbs prob change the plug to as I don't know when it was last done. The thing is it's only 7k miles!! So I thought I would try and see if anyone else has had this problem and maybe a cure. All I can tell you is that it's a 2000 W reg not modified. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Have a look in the Dominator section (or use "Search"). It's a very common problem and there are a number of potential cures.

I have the same model year... They all do that, mine only when stopped at lights. Its a PITA... But search on here and you will find that a possible solution is with the carb.

my fmx is also guilty but iv found tweaking the tick over very slightly and running it on higher octane fuel has made a huge difference. i think u kinda change ur riding style to suit really. definitely recommend the higher octane fuel. not for any performance gain but more for less back fires and smoother throttle response especially in cold weather when mine can get pretty evil

I highly advise against high octane fuel on the Dominator. The FMX with it's Fuel Injection is a different story. The good ol' carburettor on the Dommie/SLR/Vigor will not run any better on high-octane; it will simply consume more (think an extra 10-15%) for a minor boost to power (so minor that you need a dyno to measure it).

I only use high-octane before letting the bike rest for a prolonged period of time. Although I'm not really sure it does anything

the fmx engine is carbed as well mate. as far as i know pretty much the same engine as the dommie.

well generally im a little sceptical on running things on higher octane fuel i.e. like shell v-power, but it was recommended to me by honda when i queried engine cutting out etc. seeing as my tank only holds about 5 quid its not really a massive difference in price.

as i say no difference on performance but a huge differenc on smoothness and it doesnt back fire and cut out so much

    Re: Dommie cuts out?!

na its a ve-type carb. it was my understanding that honda had loads of bits left over after the dommi so they used the engine and frame and created the FMX. obviously quick enough or able to go offroad effectively so it was classed as a funmoto. ie supermoto lookalike.

anyho back to the convo, i rang honda today over another issue and the guy i spoke to had a dommi, and he recommended fuel additives to boost octane rating, although im not sure if thats more beneficial than higer octane fuel.

either way giv it a spin and see what u think

    Re: Dommie cuts out?!

Yeah, not sure on the higher octane fuel side of things. Fuel additive is the same as the pumped stuff the only difference is that you pay the earth for the little bottle. I used to use it on my classic bikes but then found out the truth!! I can't see how higher octane would make much of a differnce as it should just give a hotter cleaner burn but if it works for you thats excellent. As I said before it's been stood a while so i'm going to give the carbs a strip down I think and go though the whole thing with carb cleaner. I may even take the whole carb down to Burlen Fuels as there only down the road (got a mate who works there) see if they could come up with any answers. Maybe worth a shot as so many people have the same problem. I don't know why but I think it's 2 problems. 1) being the carb getting too hot and 2) the jetting! I maybe pissing into the wind but I love my new bike and even if I can't fix it I don't care! ltes see what happens.
