Unhappy Another Dominator motor passed away

Hi all,

I got my 91' domi last year, it had about 58000 or so km on the reader then. Got to enjoy it until yesterday. Stuck in some traffic jam for a small while resulted in engine overheating and dying.

Mechanics who did the spring maintenance on the bike warned me that it fould happen, as the engine was allready making noises both up and down... So they took it apart and estimated about 1000- 2000 km. Probably some previous owner was late with oil changes, or even let it run without. So.. it lasted for about 500 km more and then ...

So there - first bike for me, great everyday commuter and citybike.. Now with a dead engine. As i read some post here, engines for the dommie are a rare commodity... so im not really hoping to revive the oldtimer... But - it was fun until it lasted.

With the recession and so on i think it will be quite some time before ill have the money to get the next bike. When i do - i was thinking of a transalp.

Ill try to get the dommie to some friendly mechanics, ill let you know what will become of it. Most likely everything else exept the motor will be up for sale. Preferrably the whole thing. But i should find out by the end of the week.

Why dont you spend £20 on a workshop manual and re-build the engine?
Yes there are some parts you will have to pay an engineer to do (bearing presses e.t.c.) but overall it wont cost that much?

I have a 1986 xr250 with 65k MILES,and when i'm finished this re-bore it'll be working perfect again.
It's cost me about £100 quid to re-build the top end.

Just a thought anyway...Either way, good luck getting the bike you want

I just bought one off metamorph on this forum. He sent a CD which cost me a tenner. He was really helpful and it was perfect quality. Its well worth it as its a very helpful guide I've found.

Comiserations anyways, hope its not too long before your back up and running again

Ok, it seems that the story is not so bad after all. Took the thing to a mechanic friend of mine, who used to drive and build dominators for over 10 years and knows every nut and bolt.

Seems that the lower part is ok - so basically the problem is piston and pistonrings i think. Well, i hope so anyhow, ill know for sure in a couple of days

All in all - first shock is over and worst case scenario is also out of the question. Most likely the engine can be rebuilt with not so much money

Re: Another Dominator motor passed away

Ok.. Spring is coming soon and everybody starts to think about the twowheeled stuff... So do I. News so far:

I dont know the exact part names in english, but basically everything that has to do with the piston will be replaced. Plus some drilling and so on.

All in all - about 270 EUR spare parts, plus a friendly fee for the goldenhanded mechanic. So i think even with the paycuts, divorces and all that ****... I still may ride my dommie yet

Btw, to avoid this problem in the future, i need an oil temp gauge, to replace the original oil cap. Does anybody know a fitting one for an 91 dommie and where to order one?
