    Re: Oil Burning Mystery

    Hi,
I guess it is more an irritation than anything else....just don't like riding something that burns oil. I guess I am a little annoyed that it is happening at such a low mileage!

I have had loads of bikes over the years with roughly the same sort of miles on and none has given the same problem. I do like the bikes character though.

As far as oil usage is concerned; I have not really monitored it as yet, but will if I decide to leave the job for now.

It is funny.....I used to make gaskets for old Fords and things years ago, but forgot all about it and did not think you could get gasket paper anymore.....cheers for the reminder.

    Regards

    Darren

Just checked the oil......bit shocked actually as the level has gone from fully topped up to just below minimum mark in less than 800 miles, oh dear!

thats not a huge amount of oil really...
    not in 800 miles :P

mine at its worst used 1.1L in 45 miles!

I think all the valve seals had gone :P (or it became a 2 stroker :P)

Watch out making your own gaskets. The tolerances are so small these days that some gaskets have to be the correct thickness or things will be seriously wrong on assembly. The rocker cover gasket is metal and has to be the correct thickness as the cam bearings are held snug between the cover and the head. I used a very small amount of bearing seal when I assembled mine. If you take the clutch cover off there is a seal and an "O" ring under there and the gasket is like cardboard and reasonably thick.

I have done about 800 miles since I got mine running again. I checked the oil level before the weekend and hadn't used any oil. I did over 230 miles on the weekend so must check it again. I keep checking to make sure the frame is getting hot though (this tells me that oil is circulating). Hopefully the weekend after next I will be taking it across to Ireland for a long weekend.

    Keep happy and ride safe

    Mike

I did a week over there touring last year. This trip is just to catch up with a friend. I'll only be over there for a long weekend.
