Hello there

Can somebody help me with the following queries?:

Why is it necessary to check the oil level when the bike is hot?

The oil level shows full on the dipstick with a cold engine and half with a hot engine. Does oil need to drain back into the tank before checking?
I'm a little concerned as I want to avoid overfilling the oil reservoir and at the same time don't want to starve the top end.

i think it is basically because the oil can drain back into the sump past the non return valve in the oil pump when the bike is stood, sometimes thevlave willl stick open a little or it maybe worn, most likly your cold engine reading is correct, but if you get an empty reading with a cold engine and full with a hot one it is returning to the sump

Cheers for the lightning response! The bikes only done 5000 k so I guess... the oil pump's ok. Will continue to check both hot and cold.
