Re: Dominator or SLR.

I would say "Dommie" anytime. Love the French roads and can't wait to get over again. Planning a trip at the moment to ride the Miilau bridge, probably in April, not on the Dommie but on a VFR750 whoopee! A Plus Tard. Clive in sunny Jersey.

Re: Dominator or SLR.

Not meaning to be rude, but are you in any way vertically challanged? this may be a crucial factor. I'm 5' 6" and I've owned a Dom in the past and really loved it. but I've just picked up an SLR and think I prefer the riding position.
If you really want a bit more off road ability, I think an Slr with a 21" wheel and a bit of work by Hagon on the suspenders would be a bit more managable and still good on the black stuff.

Re: Dominator or SLR.

Sultan3458 – How strange the timing of your post. Firstly, your new SLR, nice bike, is a dead ringer for one I’ve had my eye on for some time. Unfortunately it’s right down near the Spanish border and would take a two-day trip to get it. Too much of a hike if it’s turns out to be a dud.

What I have been doing in the interim is checking for a Dom or SLR that is nearer to home. Well yesterday a Dom came up that looks okay so I’ve made arrangements to go to Nantes tomorrow with a view to buy.

I still really would have preferred a SLR, I think it would be more fun, but I think on reflection that the Dom will suit my needs more. I will get more range and if I don’t get my Transalp, it will fill that gap better.

As for the vertically challenged bit, I used to be 6ft but I’m sure I’m shorter now. Of course it’s not so much your height, it’s the size of your inside leg that counts. I’m either blessed or cursed with a long body and shorter legs. Now there’s no other way of saying this, but when you get older it’s a devil of a job to get your leg over. Yes, it’s no doubt been said many times but it’s a fact. I really do struggle when I’ve got all my kit on. This applies in both instances. I’ll just have to start doing some exercises or something to get the joints moving again. Ballet training perhaps? I’ve always fancied wearing a tutu.

Just to digress, How I used to laugh at those old codgers trying to reverse their cars. How funny it was watching them as they tried to turn their head around and then went bang into the wall. Well I’ve become an involuntary member of their club. I’ve not hit the wall yet but I’m heading that way. Getting old really is a pain.

Should I make a purchase I’m sure you’ll soon know. I’ll be asking questions such as, whether it’s normal for blue smoke to be funnelling out the exhaust. Or is there a spanner stored in the engine, as it sounds like it’s come loose.

Although ultimately I am after a Transalp, at the moment I am looking for a cheap SLR or Dominator to hack round the gravel strewn back roads of where I live. I will be doing some minor off road work, but only gravel tracks etc. Now I have seen and sat on both bikes in a local showroom and felt comfortable sitting on the SLR. When I tried the Dominator I felt like I was getting on a camel, I very nearly did myself a mischief. I’m just short of six foot so I can touch the ground with the balls of my feet but I can’t help feeling that being so high, if the thing starts to go, it’s going to be a b*st*rd to get up again. As I am not in the first flush of youth I feel rather reticent to lumber myself with an unwieldy lump, I already have a wife, but can’t help feeling that I’m being rather negative

Most of the reviews I have read state that the SLR is a dog, whilst giving the Dominator modest praise. For that reason I feel I should be going for the Dominator but I somehow feel attracted to the SLR. I have got a 125XL and love the riding position but it’s so much lighter.

Any views including those calling me a daft old git would be appreciated.
from what you have posted you would probably be better with a xl 600r.a lot more power and a hell of a lot lighter.plus you can pick them up rather cheap.you could get a tatty one for around a monkey and sort out the cosmetics as and when you like.goodluck.

Re: Dominator or SLR.

I would say go for the Dommie. I am 5ft9in and almost 63 with knackered shoulders (old bike/rugby injuries) and cope well with it. Amazing what ibrobrufin can do. Maybe you could get the suspension lowered if it still gives you grief. Once perched up on the dommie it can't be beaten for fun and practicality. Regards CLIVE.

Re: Dominator or SLR.

I’ve decided, the Dommie it is. When I first sat on one at the start of this thread it was in a showroom. It was tightly packed between about twenty bikes in a row and I was overly cautious when I got on and couldn’t move at all. I had this vision of losing my balance and toppling the entire row like dominoes. When I sat on the one at the weekend I had plenty of room to mount it. Once on, by the time I bounced up and down a few times and my weight settled the suspension, I was left wondering why I ever thought I had a problem in the fist place. For me the position felt tres bon.

Tractot4play – Thanks for the suggestion of the XL. The reason why I chose the Dommie is for the range. Although where I live is pretty flat and boring I have a friend who has recently moved to the Cantal and another in Spain. Now it might be just a dream but it is my intention to visit them both this year. Both areas are mountainous with roads to match. As I’m retired with plenty of time I’m hoping to motivate myself to get off my butt and do a bit of touring/camping. I feel that the Dommie would just be the ticket for those less than perfect roads that I might encounter.

Thanks once again for everyone’s feedback.
