    NX650 Starter Clutch

    Hello all,

    Recently got a 1989 NX650 Dominator.

Having problems starting it with the button though, sometimes it does, most of the time it doesn't.

My dad says it's the starter clutch that is the problem, it's not gripping properly, so we're after a fresh one if anyone has one spare or knows of one.

    Thank you,
    Simon.

Anyone know if the starter clutch from an XL600 or NTV650 will fit?.
    Thanks.

I'm having mine replaced this Saturday as having the same problem, starter clutch has two pieces to it (so the garage told me) one's about £90 t'other is about £50, plus a bit of labour.

But that depends on what they see when it's in bits, it might just need a clean out etc, or it might need one piece or both.

Worst case I reckon about £200.

Also add to the posting above, It's worth double checking the battery state of charge and the block connector r/h side on frame that connects the h/bar switch..... I just did mine last week and found it full of green gunk, causing intermittant fault/short.

My SLR starter gear was full of oily mayonaisse gunk, i removed the gennny cover and cleaned it all up it was much better after that and no need to remove the flywheel either, took the opportunity to clean the starter connections at the same time

Thank you for all the replies.

We'll go through the suggestions and see it that helps. When it doesn't start with the button, it either sounds like the starter motor is spinning freely, or makes a grinding or shredding noise.

Here is a pic of it:

    Thanks.

That describes starter clutch failure exactly. It really is a very nasty unhealthy noise.

Ah a better description of the fault, "press the starter button and it sounds like a sewing machine" forget the lectric bit just pull the the starter clutch/gear out and get your wallet out........oh and new oil and filter.
    And take some piccies.
