    Speedo problem

Guys, how often does the speedo packin on these dommies,,its a 92... i know on other bikes.. the main cause fur the speedo not working is a broken cable...

My speedo dont work, on further investigation last nite, i took my old cable off an it looks all good an intact.. i take it the needle that does the drive in the drive hub stays in there, as the cable didnt have the inner piece sticking out of it...

coluld it be the actual speedo drive thats mounted on the spindle thats gubbed,,is this an often thing that breaks......
I dont really need the speedo as i can imagine the speeds i do.. but it would help if it was right...........
Ive ordered a new speedo cable, but now am thinking its not that, so that might jist be a spare...I take it highly unlikly to be the clocks themselves... the rev counter works fune......?. CHEERTS GUYS,,, AS I KNOW AL GET FEEDBACK

Its the speedo drive that needs looking at. you can fix it by replacing the worn lip with two small pins. so it makes contact with the front drive wheel.

Or you can just buy another drive cog for about twenty pounds ish.

    Re: Speedo problem

I've just had to replace the speedo drive wheel on mine ('88 - 20800 miles(apparently))...after buying a new cable because i thought it had snapped.

These are just plastic and the hub can run dry so the teeth on the drive wheel strip. If this is the case with yours, you'll have to spend about an hour with wd40 and a bit of rag to get all of the little plastic shards out of the unit. Dont put the new wheel in until you've done this thoroughly as it will strip the teeth from the new wheel....and pack it full of grease.

    Re: Speedo problem

Sure, its an easy job really but you need to get the front of the bike in the air.
Take the front wheel out to get to the speedo drive unit, remove the spacery type thing thats in it and you come to the speedo drive wheel which probabaly has had its teeth stripped.
Remove this and all the plastic shards which will take a while, and put the new one in, make sure it turns nicely and put it all back together.

Also make sure that the built-in gear (i.e. what the end of the cable locates to) spins freely as if its seized this will cause the teeth to strip on the drive wheel too

    Hope this helps

Please dont use grease on plastics !
Certain geases will make plastics brittle you would be better off useing (if you have babies around) Zink & caster oil as it is vegetable based or at a push vasaline ,vasaline is still petroluim based but is marginally better then grease

If you don't grease and use a proper seal, the speedo will break upon riding offroad. It only takes a few miles.
