    FMX650 electric start query

    Hi,
Stupid question I know but I think I may have a wiring problem with my FMX650.

To start the bike I have to pull in the front brake lever and the press the electric start.
Everybike I have owned it has been the clutch lever pulled into start it.

I know it should not really matter as it starts anyway, but the headlight only comes on when the front brake is applied as well. I know this is not right but trying to work out if they are related.

    Many thanks in advance.

Do you have the electric scheme?
Otherwise I can scan it for you.
It's part of the owners manual but it's very small...

    Hi,
Thanks Checked earths and cleaned them up still the same.

I have the wiring diagram from the service manual and all seems ok.

Do you have the electric scheme? do you mean the one from the service manual? if not then would love a scan please.

Just really trying to find out if its correct for the front brake having to be applied to start the bike before I start looking into things a bit deeper.

    Thanks anyway.

    Cheers

No, that's not right. Sounds like a problem within the right hand switchgear, the connectors that lead to it or an earth fault. Time to get out the multimeter.

    Re: FMX650 electric start query

When you pull the clutch in does the brake light come on?

Could it have had the loom replaced wrongly?

Seriously, somewhere along the wiring is a short, the starter button being a seperate cluster from the brake means it must be wiring rather than switches i would guess.

Long shot, but my mate had a similar problem ages ago on his gpz500 and it turned out to be the main fuse!

    Re: FMX650 electric start query

    Thanks for replies,

Thought it was a bit odd having to apply front brake to start bike

Ordered a right hand switchgear as thought something feesl not quite right so will try the new one tomorrow.
If no luck its time to get the wiring diagram out and the multimeter and start tracing back.

No brake light when I pull the clutch but the headlight comes on and off with the brake light as does the actual rear brake light.

Changed all the fuses just in case and no luck.

All else fails think will be easier to get a loom from fleabay and start a fresh.

    Cheers

Could be the wrong rear bulb fitted or wired wrong causing it to draw an earth though the lighting. Can't see why you need to pull the front brake to start though. Got to be something totally wired wrong.

    Re: FMX650 electric start query

Does the same apply to the rear brake, ie does it start, headlights and all that sh*t or is it just the front brake.

It sounds like there is no earth for the ignition circuit and it is somehow jumping to the brake lighting circuit when the front brake is applied.

Were just groping in the dark now, could it be the ignition switch? After all the lights should come on when the ignition is switched on.

    It's multimeter time

    Re: FMX650 electric start query

Many thanks for all the replies and kind advice.

All sorted now, put a new starter/kill switch and all back to normal and sorted.

As tested the switch and the only 12v feed was to brake light switch?

So thought for a long shot try a different switch and sorted straight away.
    So back mobile again almost!
just need to find an aftermarket headlight that will fit, look good and that will pass an MOT as stood on mine by accident and broke plastic lugs on casing. Never liked the headlight anyway.

    Cheers
