    another Dominator in the forum

    Hello,

I am new to this forum and just wanted to say hi before I start asking questions…

I bought a ´96 Dominator back in February. At first I found it quite daunting because I was coming from a 49cc moped. Only now I am starting to relax a bit. I am still struggling sometimes with the downshifts, which can be a bit “abrupt” if I don´t open the throttle in the right moment, but getting there.

The bike had 38.000km on the odometer when I bought it and it is now approaching the 45.000km mark. During this time the bike has been performing great. Actually I the only work I have done on it so far is replacing the oil and oil filter.

The only problem I have is that it stalls every now and then in traffic lights. After reading some threads in this forum I know now that the problem is quite common. Soon I will open the carburettor to replace the idle jet, hopefully fixing the issue. But that will be in a few weeks time, when it is not so hot outside.

For now I leave you with 2 photos of the bike, one on its own and another with a friend.

    Cheers
    gonzalo

Before pulling the carb off, let's get the two most commons things out of the way first.
Dominator, SLR, Vigor, Transalp, they all must not have their tickover too low.
Make sure it is at least 1100 rpm
Make sure your choke is not stuck.
Can't remember from my Dommie whether you could sort that out without removing the carb.
Great bike, but the hardest carb in the world to remove
I found it easier removing a bank of four carbs of a 750!

    Welcome Gonzalo.

    Great pics .

Just got a bigger idle jet to solve the problem on mine, not yet fitted though.

Re: another Dominator in the forum

If not properly warmed up (dead cold engine), the bike is likely to stall at lights unless you keep the throttle SLIGHTLY open. [oil temp >60'C should be fine]

If the spark plug is old, the bike might stall at idle. [spark plugs should be replaced along with oil filter = every other oil change-- they're dirt cheap anyway]

If the idle is below 1400, the bike might stall. [manual recommends 1350rpm+-100rpm; I get best results with 1400 since it allows a free clock-less idle soon after starting; check idle at normal op. temp.]

Other causes might include gummed up carb, bad card settings (bad mixture) and aging problems (rubber intake manifold cracked).

Why change the idle jet? Just turn the mixture screw out 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

Re: another Dominator in the forum

    Thanks for your answers.
The first thing I did when I bought the bike was increasing the idle speed to 1500rpm. This is easily done with a little black knob on the side of the bike.
This improved things a bit but I still have the problem, even when up to running temp.
I will follow the rest of your recommendations and I will let you know how it goes.

    Regards
