Just got a big red dominator

Just bought my first big boy bike but having a few problems and worried that i have got a rubbish bike.

Well she doesn't seem to start very well that is not true she starts fine but then she makes a pop sound and the revs fall off then they pic bk up and she sounds fine then she pops again and the revs drop this happens a few times then she dies.

anybody got any ideas what i should be looking for also there seems to be drops of fuel coming out the pipes under the engine.

Are you sure it isn't the same problem just about EVERY dominator/slr/fmx with similar engines, they cut out if the tickover is a tiny bit too low. As for the fuel, is it running down the pipes from somewhere else or is it leaking from the pipes?

Out of the pipes. she runs but i have to keep it about 2500rpm

How much fuel is leaking out? ie. few drops overnight, or visible drops every few seconds.

its only when i turn it over and its running on tic over there is slow build up then a drip.

after reading bits and bobs it looks like it could be the CDI does anybody know anything more about getting a new one?

Hmmmm, I was just wondering whether the two issues might be connected, but if it's only a little bit of petrol coming out then I doubt it.

Back to it not running well; have you checked the rubber 'tube' which connects the carburettor to the engine block? This can cause all sorts of problems if it has cracks in it (messes up the fuel/air mix) remember even very small cracks can cause problems.

i have had a good look and it looks in good nick but i don't know. i haven't removed the tank or anything was kinda hoping i wouldnt need to. is there anyway to test for cracks with everything in still on the bike?

Keep it simple. that big fat screw for the idle tick over speed !! wind it in a turn or two and the popping will disappear...... even if the idle seems a little high you will notice the popping stops, then tweak it out a little.

On most carbs, turning the screw clockwise (in) raises the tickover speed.

How does it feel to ride? Jerky, smooth, loosing power, normal etc etc.

I'm not sure what you're looking for but I'll just go ahead and write down how I start a bike;

1. Ignition On
2. Choke Fully On
3. Press Starter (Engine Starts)
4. Turn Choke to Half as long as the engine doesn't cut out, in which case return to full choke.
5. When engine is warm (3mins+/-) Turn Choke fully Off.

Make sure the idle speed is as recommended though (for the SLR650 it's 1300rpm)
