    rounded off nut

    Hey again lads, I went to change the oil on my dommie and discovered the oil drain bolt next to the gear lever is rounded off, I,ve tried getting a thin nosed
    vise grip but theres no room to manouvre it to even budge the bolt!
    Im wondering what are my options, I just want to drain the oil and was in the process of doing this, the oil drain bolt on the frame came out no problem so I have a good bit of the old oil already emptied out, is there anything else I could undo to drain the rest of the oil?

    Re: rounded off nut

    I was facing this on my old NX but never got around to it.

    Laying the bike on its side with a pan under the open crankshaft plug will get most of the oil out but it's far from ideal obviously (and potentially quite messy).

    Possible fixes I've theorised about include getting the engine out, or at least loosened enough to be able to rock it and get some working space. These will work but it's a lot of work and the pipes need to come off which are fragile. Another option might be to get a dremel in there and turn the unruly bolt into something that'll take a flat blade (impact driven) screwdriver, or get someone to weld on an extension bar from a socket set...

    The oil in most boat engines is sucked out by syringe or pump....... don't know if this would be possible with the Dommie engine, but perhaps it could get you out of a fix??

    I've used a different version of these before and was amazed how well they worked had to tap the socket on wth a hammer to get it to bite in but once it bit the bolt was out

    If it is not completely rounded off, a metrinch or 6 wall drive socket may still budge it. I am amazed at the state of some of the nuts I've shifted with mine.

    These sometimes work;

    Or drill the bolt and use an 'easy out'

    I agree with a previous poster. Try a six sided socket rather than a 12 point bi-hex, had this work on a totally mullered bolt head before now.

    Thats the ones i've used. if you can get them to bite they pull themselves onto the head of the bolt the harder you turn them the tighter they grip

    try hammering a smaller imperial socket over it and see if it will undo or drill it and put an easy out down there.
