new jets and drilled out pipes.

hi all.i'm sober for this post so i hopefully will be able to spell and not repeat to much as i did on my last post.i have now drilled my end cans out(2x22mm holes on each can.the holes overlap and look like a pair of tv binocular vision thingy.......dont know if that makes sense) and re-riveted the silver caps back on.it makes a great noise and it does seem to run alot smoother through the whole rev range.i'm really happy with the overall outcome.i still have to set the slow jet as it is turned out 1 3/4 turns and i think it needs to be moved just to see if i can get the idleing any better.also does anyone have any ideas on what will happen if i rip out the snorkel on the air box?will it make it any smoother or not?

Removing the snorkel will get the air into the engine faster, which will assist your mid range. Did with mine anyway. If you haven't already, you'll prob have to up the jets a little but worth it in the end.
    Think mine's now got a 165 mian and a .50 idle.

Edit, just spotted the "drunk" thread.

Well I might aswell rip out the snorkel then.I'm on the same jets as you so if it is working for you then I will have a go to.just bought one of those right angled drivers to get to the slow jet.I don't suppose you can remember how your slow jet is set can you.taa

The slow jet is set where the idle rpm on your bike is highest.

I am wondering what's going on in that engine of yours, rejetting usually involves looking what it does on your bike and not just asking for stuff on a forum.

Also, 165 is a pretty big jet. Might work with the drilled out cans, might be too big, might be too small, who knows unless you check.

Mine had a 153 main jet with a cut snorkel K&N and street legal ProDuro. Which was smaller than the 155 stock jet. Only found the 153 was good when it went on a Dyno, before I'd just followed everyone's advice on internet fora that I needed bigger jets and by the time I had a 165 in there it was super rich.

so what your saying to be sure is to put it on a dyno.im getting advice on what others are doing and it seems to work for them but then you are telling me something different.what did we do before the dyno rolling road.have i got it all wrong now or what.i asked so many questions before actually going through with all the work i have done to make sure i did'nt balls it up and seemed to get the same(ish) advice from different users who had done all these little fixes before me.im no expert but a bike is only a process of little parts that make the whole thing and if well researched you can sort anything out or solve any problem.i am open to as much advice as possible but would you say i have gone wrong and if so what would you suggest.....

I used larger main and idle jets in my dommi but i followed Daves carb mods and it worked a treat i plug chopped mine to see how it was running during the mod process and i ended up with a 195 main seems super large but i am running a full K&N replacement filter ( replaced airbox completely) with an Arrow can so the extra gas flow in and out required much larger jets. Good luck with your mods I'm sure you will get it right just beware going too lean.

Re: new jets and drilled out pipes.

Putting it on a Dyno is IMO the most reliable way to get it right.
In the olden days they did it looking at the brown-ness of a spark plug, but that's a lost art in these days of unleaded it's all grey anyway.

But mostly you seem to be doing things backwards, the idea is that you alter the jetting to match the mods on the bike, not change the jetting and then do mods and hope they match up...

Here's a good description of the tuning process:
    CV Carb Tuning Procedures
(This is actually the high rpm link, they have a low rpm page as well but I can't find it and their site is some horrid late 90's geocities-style thing. The principle is the same anyway, apart from the revs.)

As rubberchicken described it is checking the colour of the sparkplug,
here is a couple of links showing and explaining the art
