    rev conter issue solved??

ok peeps here goes, have had double revs reading for a while on a Honda Dominator 2002 rd08a bike with an engine from a rd02e, tried

1, tried 3 diffrent set of clocks and no joy

2, was advised that Zeeltronic do a gadget called the rev2dn, which you plum into your rev counter via earth(to bike frame), 12v live(wired into the left hand side of the handle bars a wire that is black and red), rev counter(green and black i beleive), and cdi unitoff the top of my head not sure but think it was black yellow maybe) , which i have done.

but it kind of works looks right but as the revs go up it looks wrong over 5000rpm and now the kick in the nuts bit... now the bike is backfiring and dies, pull over go to nuetral or pull clucth in, takes a while to start and then your away again for another 2 mins till it does it again.

so want some feedback from nickinbrum who i beleive fitted the same gadget for diffrent reasons on a project bike and any of you guys who are elec wizards cos to be honest im now left scratching my head.

so maybe a case of taking gadget off bike and putting up with no rev counter if i cant find an answer cos the bike was running great before the gadget was working now it works the bike isnt happy and im erm well not sure what to do next, prob an easy fix if you know your stuff with elecs n stuff, so come on guys n girls what now?

    Re: rev conter issue solved??

    hi rex mundi,
when i first fitted the rev2 box it worked perfectly, then after a while it started to work a bit erraticly, now seems to be ok again ,
so seems they can be a bit hit or miss,
to be honest i dont really need a rev counter anyway,i know when its time to change gear without looking at the clocks,
your other problem ,the backfiring and cutting out, sounds very similar to the symptoms i had on my xr250 when the pick up coil was feked,
would run great until i was 5 miles from home ,then start backfiring, running crap and cutting out, once it had cooled down again would be ok for a few more miles,
that problem was easy enough to diagnose with a resistance check on the pick up coil, have also had dodgy cdi's cause the same problems, only way i know of testing that is to swap for a known good one,
i'd be surprised if its directly related to fitting the rev2 box, possibly the connections to cdi have been disturbed when fitting it,
it certainly hasn't caused any running issues on my bike

cheers for the reply nick have removed the rev2 box myself now and its just the same, so yeah gotta be the coil or the cdi, its doesnt even have to be hot just seems to happen in top gear and approaching 65-70 and then its misfires then there is a lack of power and it dies, starts again withing 20, 30 secs and your off again and will do it again either in highish revs before changing gear or as before if it hasnt done it already so not 100% sure, but not pleased just had a major service done and a wheel rebuild so looks like its gonna have to sit in the garage till i can sort that out, have now ordered a new coil and will be in the garage tmrw checking the conection and plug on the cdi just incase its been knocked about during the fitting and removal of the revd gadget, so fingers crossed i can get it back on the road tmrw and behaving as normal, dont wanna buy a cdi unit 3 on evil bay 2 over £80 and one at 99p so fingers crossed i can solve it or al least pin point a problem tmrw, cant be asked going back out the garage now
