Servicing a 950/990

I am very interested in a KTM 950 or 990 but I’ve heard there a bit of a nightmare
To service 3 hours to change the oil, is that right also my friend has the 660 (I think that’s right) he has only done about 30,000 miles or so and he needs a top end rebuild he has always has it serviced by a dealer, is the 990 the same.

three hours to change the oil ! my arse
sounds expensive to do a top end rebuild after 30 k if it's true ?
my 950 had only done 15 k so i can't really answer your question
if someone on here has covered that sort of mileage i'm sure you'll get your answer soon ?
have you looked on adventure rider ?

Im not sure it's going to take 3 hours, but you havn't got any access to the enguin with the fairing on so i should think you have to take the tank etc off, remember singles take more abuse so the the 30k may be true

Sadly it looks like a right pain to change the oil and filter and you have to clean some mesh screens as well, (tank of to this) I love the bike but want to spent my time riding it not taking it apart, so I think I will stay with my @ less power but a lot less hassle.

It's not too bad to do the oil on an LC8 once you get the knack of it. But it is a bigger job than on a lot of other bikes, that's true.

Changing the oil filter is simple, you just remove the cover from the left hand side of the engine, no fairing removal required, although you have to drop the bash plate.

To clean the oil pickup screen on the right hand side is equally simple.

There's a screen in the oil tank output but to be honest I usually don't bother with that, on the few occasions I have pulled it out it's been clean anyway. These are only coarse mesh screens so unless you've got some serious **** in your engine they'll not need cleaning.

To drain the oil you can remove the left hand fairing and tank to easy access to the drain plug. Some people have said you can drain it without removing the tank, using some sort of funnel / pipe arrangement I guess.

I reckon I can change the oil on mine in about an hour. But doing the same on my wife's Fazer would only take 20 mins

I'm sure if you took the bike to a KTM dealer they'd charge for 3 hours labour!
