    Converting 990A into an SM

Was it stanbloke that fitted smaller wheels to a 990A? Anyone else tried it?

I'm looking to buy a 990SM and having a second set of slightly more offroad tyres and a touratech frame made up - however it might be easier to start with a 990A and turn it into an SM?

I want a road going hooligan bike that I can still take camping at the weekend - I'll get a light dirtbike for anything more serious. I'm worried that the 990A won't be the same level of 'balls out' fun as the 990SM is, even if converted to smaller wheels.

    Ideas?

    Martin;

    I had 17" wheels on mine for a while...sussies set on "Sport"....Outrageous!..

The SM has not got the suspension travel for anything other than road stuff.

Go for the ADV and have the best of both worlds mate..

I met a fella who had a 950 ADV with the 17" rims already on it, he wanted std rims and i was looking for 17's, we swapped..

I had a spare set of std rims which i bought from Fleabay a few months earlier, so i ended up with the best of both worlds !!..I had no problems with the 17" front, although some preffer the 19" front / 17" rear combo.

I must admit that i do miss them, "hooning" around took on a whole new meaning when passing an R6 and a GSX on the way into the bends, with the brakes hard on and the back wheel skipping about while laughing your head off at the looks of disbelief you get.

    2.50 x 19 front and 4.25 x 17 rear. . Who you got to build the wheels ?.

This set up will take 110/80x19 front tyre and a 150/70x17 rear, Contis road attacks are great, but you can fit tourance/anakees/ trailattacks......just about anything you fancy matey..

Re: Converting 990A into an SM

I have two firms on the case so i can compair prices , Talon and a firm called Central Wheel Components.

I have got them to price up a 3.5x19 front to take a 120/70/19 D208
    and a ...............................5.5x17 rear to take a 180/55/17 D208

BUT measuring the swing arm last night its a tad tight so may need to go to the size you used ie 4.25 with a 150 tyre.
its also a tad tight at the front so again may drop it down to 2.5 with a 110 tyre. Who suggested your wheel/tyre size ???

    Will keep you posted

I know both companies try Hagon too tho.

The 180 is a bit Ott, IMHO , i have had a 5" rim with a 160/60 and that was as wide as i would go really mate..

Good luck with the new wheels, and dont forget to let us know how they are..
