Buy a local Landranger 1:50,000 scale ordnance survey map from WH Smiths and look for the rights of way part of the key. Then look for the marking for Byways open to all traffic. Those are legal to ride (unless signs on site indicate otherwise).
However the map will not really show what sort of condition they are in. If you're new to trail riding then don't take a large trail bike down one on your own unless you've seen the whole thing first. Take it very slowly when you do. If you go to your local TRF group they should be able to tell you which lanes are best for you on a big bike.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.
1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!
Oh and the Big Trail Bike Club would be another place to ask. Is that what it's called?Originally Posted by YEN_POWELL

Or come down to Devon, the delightful people in charge here signpost unmetalled roads.
So the last sign I saw involved a screeching stop, quick U-Turn and a short ride down this "road". Stopped at a gate across the track that had a house nearby, the lady of the house came around to see what the noise was and I took the opportunity to ask her if there was a right of way through the gate.
She replied that she'd seen lots of bikes go through the gate, "but never one as big as that"!! So discretion and all, I turned round (again!) and went off to ride another day![]()
The TRF might be another option?
Cheers

Plenty of nice trails around the Peak District but you will fall off and get stuck in the mud so don't go out by yourself unless you know what the trail is like or want to end up like this:Originally Posted by thirtyfour2
Anyway, I would've thought a ride around Longon or Fenton would be sufficiently exciting for anybody.
Wonderful - at last evidence that its not only me who does that!Originally Posted by matthelliwell
