    just off the motorway......

Had this idea for a series of posts. As I travel up and down the M6 between junctions 32 and 21 day after day I know what is just off all the junctions in between that is useful to know.

I thought if I started it on that bit motorway others could add stuff about other junctions on the M6 and other motorways. Once we get enough information we (well a mod) could put in a wiki or in a sticky.

Rules - not too far from the junction and must dead easy to find - this is about remembering "oh yeah, just off Junction 27 there is a cafe and filling station" sort of thing. So no "third left after the 5th set of lights and down a narrow lane for miles"

    So here goes.........
Junction 34 - Not a lot here. Head towards Lancaster for about 1/2mile for cheap Shell petrol. Otherwise trading estates, hotels, and shopping. Head towards Kirkby Lonsdale for Bull beck Picnic Site (Bike meets, butty van, loos etc) and Devils Bridge.
Junction 33 - Even less here. Pubs and "Junction 33 Dynojet" in Galgate (head towards Lancaster). For Dynojet turn right at lights in Galgate.
Junction 32 - this is M6/M55 junction, so not a lot here.
M55 Junction 1 - Petrol 1/2 mile north and South. Plenty of hotels and pubs near junction in any direction. Head into Preston for shops and other stuff. Can be very busy and best avoided at rush hour.
Junction 31A. Limited access junction leave motorway northbound only and join the motorway Southbound only. Wyder Honda - dealer about 1/2 mile from junction on the east side of the motorway - turn left at slip road roundabout follow your nose and the dealer is on the right. Motel thing on the junction.
Junction 31. Right on the river ribble. Filling station next to the tickled trout hotel. Free Cash machine at station. Head towards Preston City centre for about 3/4 mile and Hein Gericke is on the right. Traffic Police HQ is on the junction.
Junction 30 - M6 /M61 interchange. Watch for speed cameras that hide under the bridges here.
Junction 29 - M6 / M65 interchange and local roads. Head towards preston for 1/2 mile and find Sainsbury's superstore with cheap petrol, cash machines, B&Q, Burgerking, Pubs and Hotels.
Junction 28 - Access to Leyland town centre to the West. Pub and small shops about 1/4 mile East. Cheap petrol about 1 mile south on A6.
Charnock Richard Services - only stopped once to fix a bulb. Usual stuff at usual standard I assume
Junction 27. Petrol and Cafe about 200yards East. Free cash machine at Station.
Junction 26. M6/M58 Interchange - one of the more interesting and complicated junctions - double roundabouts and fast sweepers to leave/join the motorway. Orrell Motorcycles about 1/4 mile - head towards Orrell and turn right at lights. Petrol shops and usual stuff in Orrell.
Junction 25. Limited access. Join only southbound; Leave only northbound. I have never been on this junction - seems to go to middle of nowhere.
Junction 24. Another limited access. This time its leave only southbound and join only northbound. To the east about 1/4mile is Ashton in Makerfield - shops, petrol and stuff.
Junction 23. Petrol station on roundabout - usually cheap. Free cash Machine in station. This is a CRAZY junction - 3 major roads come together here. There are five lanes on the roundabout dropping to 3 lanes, then back to 5. All controlled by several sets of lights and the A580 cutting across the lot. Approach with caution. The petrol station is designed to be accessed from the Manchester bound A580 only, but you can sneak on from the roundabout. Tesco about 1 mile towards Liverpool. Several Hotels very near, and of course Haydock Park racecourse. Use A580 as an alternative to get to Manchester or Liverpool if M62 is snarled up (but then everyone will be as well )
Junction 22 - absolutely nothing here except a shortcut to the M62 - follow signs to Warrington. Oh, a good farm shop on the east side about 1/2mile.
    Junction 21A - M6/M62 Interchange.
Junction 21 - Access to Warrington really and that's about it. Shops towards Warrington, including Warrington Motorcycles about 2 miles on right.
Junction 20 - Lymm Lorry Stop - services of a sort about 1/4 mile East/South. McDonalds. Manchester Ducati about 2 miles East/South of Junction. I have never been the other way.

    Re: just off the motorway......

From Junction 11 of the M25 (Chertsey), head towards Woking.

When you get to the roundabout with a Harvester (About 2 -3 miles of fairly free flowing road) restaurant, you have located Ottershaw village which has a:
    • pharmacist
    • dentist
    • 2 petrol stations
    • a general shop
    • a very nice curry house.
