Hi. Is there anywhere I can find out where I can legally get off road near to where I live without having to go through the lethargic local council offices?

Look at the most recent Ordnance Survey Landranger map for 'Byways Open to All Traffic' or visit your nearest TRF group and go on a run out with them.

I'd recomend the second option as some byways aren't that obvious on the ground unless you've done them before, better to follow someone and know you're in the right place.
